MONDAY NIGHT: Check-Cashing Application On Board's Agenda Despite Ban

Business slated for Route 35 is subject to recent local legislation, but scheduled for hearing on Monday

The Planning Board is expected to hear an application for a check-cashing business on Route 35 that was the impetus behind recent local legislation adopted by the Township Committee banning check-cashing from that road.

Be-Av-Mar, the company that wants to convert the property at 1835 Route 35, is scheduled for a hearing on Monday, according to the board’s agenda.

But the Township Committee on Feb. 9 adopted an ordinance barring check-cashing businesses from opening on Route 35. It is unclear whether the company will go ahead with the application.

Calls to Wall-based attorney Paul D’Apolito, who is representing Bel-Av-Mar, were unreturned.

The committee, which adopted the local law at its Feb. 9 meeting, was prompted to act after a business on Route 35 erected a sign announcing check-cashing services. Officials said they thought the site at 1835 Route 35 was going to be a mortgage business instead.

According to the township officials, the owners told the Planning Board during an informal hearing that the business would conduct general financial services. Later, owners then put up the check-cashing sign.

“The Planning Department put together an analysis, made some recommendations to the Township Committee, and the Township Committee at the last meeting adopted those regulations where what zones they felt were appropriate for these kinds of facilities,’’ Township Administrator Joe Verruni has said. “And Route 35 is not one of those.”
