Newberry announces he will seek his party's nomination for Monmouth County freeholder

Committeeman George Newberry is seeking the Republican nomination for a seat on the Monmouth County Freeholder Board.

Newberry, 55, this week announced he will seek his party’s nod for the county board this November, according to a release.

Newberry, a lifelong township resident, was elected to the Township Committee in 2008. He served as mayor in 2010.

His term on the Township Committee expires this year, along with his 2008 running mate, Mayor Ann Marie Conte.

“I know first-hand what a tremendous jewel Monmouth County is,’’ Newberry said in the release, dated Tuesday. “It is with that value in my heart for this county that I announce my candidacy for Freeholder.”

Newberry could not be reached for comment Thursday.

Mary DeSarno, township Republican chair, said the local GOP backs Newberry's bid for higher office.

"I feel he is a well qualified, hard-working public servant. We've been
privileged to have him serve our municipality,'' DeSarno said in an e-mail statement. "If elected, Monmouth County residents will be the recipient of his drive, enthusiasm, high integrity and sense of duty."

New Jersey’s primary elections will be held June 7.
