Door-To-Door Sales Regs To Get Second Look

Residents' complaints prompt action

The last time the township’s ordinance regulating door-to-door solicitation was updated, the Village People had just come out with their hit song “YMCA.’’

It’s been that long. And Deputy Mayor Todd Luttman would like to change that.

Responding to residents’ complaints about a recent spate of after-hours door-to-door solicitations, Luttman dug into the town’s laws concerning solicitation and found that it may be ripe for updating.

“I think we should address it,’’ Luttman said. “I mean, a lot has changed since then.’’

The ordinance says that door-to-door solicitations are allowed only between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. But Luttman said recently residents have complained about people knocking on their doors after 8 p.m.

The ordinance also requires that solicitors apply and be granted a permit to conduct door-to-door solicitations in town.

Luttman has spoken to Police Chief Robert Brice, who is to make recommendations for modifying and updating the ordinance, according to Township Administrator Joe Verruni.

“I’m just asking that we take a look at it and maybe tighten up some parts,’’ Luttman said.
