Manasquan's $306K Plan for Beachfront Buildings: Restrooms, Lifeguard Station, Gazebos

Contract to repair to existing buildings, plus another $75,000 to oversee construction

Manasquan is advancing plans to repair existing beachfront buildings damaged in Hurricane Sandy for a cost estimated at $306,000.

The borough recently opened bids for the project, which would rebuild the inlet comfort station and gazebo improvements on Riverside Drive, the restroom and lifeguard building on Ocean Avenue, and the beach department building on Second Avenue.

Manasquan is also planning to add a new gazebo at Riddle Way but did not award the contract for the work, though bids were opened for the project.

Three bids were received for the project, with the lowest bid at $316,000 when adding in the alternate gazebo. The borough engineer estimated the work would come in at $437,000.

McAuley Construction was awarded the contract as the lowest bidder, for $306,000 when factoring out the alternate gazebo.

McAuley, of Long Branch, said it could do the work for the following cost: $109,043 for the Inlet comfort station, $37,915 for Riverside Drive gazebo improvements, $95,301 for the restroom and lifeguard facility at Ocean Avenue and $67,241 for the 2nd Avenue beach department building.

The price of the Riverside Drive gazebo was just more than half of what the borough estimated the project would cost, which was $75,000.

However, the work for the 2nd Avenue beach department building was bid higher than the borough engineer's estimate, which was $58,000.

At its meeting this week, Manasquan Council agreed to pay borough engineer T&M Associates of Toms River $75,825 to administer the bidding, draft plans and oversee construction of the project.
