Newberry Out As Freeholder, In For Township Committee

Committeeman George Newberry is not GOP's pick for freeholder, but gets unanimous support for committee run

A day after losing a bid to represent the Monmouth County Republicans as a candidate for a freeholder seat, the township GOP gave its unanimous support to the incumbent for a re-election bid.

George Newberry on Saturday in the county GOP selection committee meeting polled the lowest among three Republican nominees  to be the GOP's pick for an open county freeholder seat in the November election.

Spring Lake Councilman Gary Rich won the nomination with 25 votes. Manalapan Mayor Mayor Andrew Lucas garnered 23, while Newberry received 22.

Howell Mayor Bob Walsh, who also was in contention, withdrew from the race prior to the polling.

But on Sunday, Newberry, along with Mayor Ann Marie Conte, received the unanimous support of the Wall Township Republicans who endorsed the pair in their bids to retain their seats in November.

“I am disappointed about the county vote,'' said township GOP Vice Chair Jo Schloeder. "I think (Newberry) would make a phenomenal freeholder. But the county's loss is Wall Township's gain.''
