NJ Transit Announces Increased Police Following bin Laden Death

Transit system added officers at certain locations systemwide

New Jersey Transit riders may notice additional state, local and NJ Transit police at key locations throughout its system in the wake of news of the killing of Osama bin Laden, according to a release.

NJ Transit does not release details of specific police deployments, the release says and the beefed up presence is no indication of a credible threat.

But the transit system “will continue  to maintain a heightened state of vigilance,’’ the release says.

NJ Transit Police also maintains close communication with the state Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness, the FBI, and other agencies at the federal state and municipal level, the release says.

Riders are encouraged to report any suspicious activity unattended packages at stations, aboard trains or buses, or near transit facilities to call the NJ TRANSIT security hotline at 1-888-TIPS-NJT or notify a NJ TRANSIT police officer.  All calls are investigated, and all information is confidential, the release says.
