Point Boro Recommends Those in Flood-Prone Areas to Move to Higher Ground

UPDATE: Memorial Middle School dance postponed until Feb. 22

Point Boro is recommending that residents in flood-prone areas seek safer ground until the approaching storm passes and the risk of flooding subsides.

"With a coastal flood warning having been issued for Monmouth, Ocean and Middlesex Counties tonight into tomorrow, the Borough encourages all residents who were affected by Hurricane Sandy to stay alert to changing conditions," the Borough announces on its Facebook page.

The National Weather Service (NWS) forecast, which was updated just before 11 a.m., but is subject to change, now predicts for today: "Threat of heavy snowfall continues. Winter storm warnings and wind advisories in effect for coastal areas. Coastal flooding threat continues. Coastal flood warnings in effect for the high tides Friday evening and Saturday morning. Moderate to major beach erosion is expected.

The forecast also states, for today: "Windy. rain and snow this morning will transition to mainly rain for the afternoon hours. Temps nearly steady in the mid to upper 30s. Winds NE at 25 to 35 mph.

"For tonight: Windy with periods of rain and snow this evening turning to snow overnight. Low 26F. Winds N at 25 to 35 mph. Snow accumulating 4 to 10 inches. Winds could occasionally gust over 40 mph."

Very hazardous travel is expected for the evening commute and well into the night with visibility down to one quarter mile at times, according to the NWS.

"Isolated power outages are possible," NWS says. "Temperatures will be falling into the 20s late today and today. A winter storm warning means significant amounts of snow, sleet and ice are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible."
