State DOT: Route 18 To Get Facelift

Six miles of the road, up to its connection with Route 138 in town, to be resurfaced

Portions of Route 18 are slated to get a facelift, the state Department of Transportation said Thursday.

Six miles of the state highway that carries approximately 21,000 vehicles per day will be resurfaced between Deal Road in Ocean Township and Route 138 in Wall, according to a release.

The timing of the project is not exact but roadsigns announcing the construction are being placed this week, and is scheduled to be complete by the end of summer, according to the release.

The $4 million project will mill and resurface Route 18 southbound with a new surface course of asphalt pavement from milepost 11.25 through Ocean and Neptune townships to milepost 5.14, at the southern terminus of the highway in Wall, the release says.

The outside shoulders will be repaved in both directions between mileposts 11.25 and 13.5 in Ocean Township and Eatontown Borough, the release says.

Approximately 2.1 miles of new median crossover protection guiderail will be installed throughout the project limits where necessary, according to the release.

“This project will benefit thousands of motorists and demonstrates the Christie Administration’s commitment to funding state-of-good-repair projects throughout New Jersey,”  said James Simpson, state DOT commissioner, in the release.

Work requiring single-lane closures will be performed at night in order to minimize traffic jams on Route 18, the release says.

All lanes will be open between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, with some trafic shifts where necessary. Between May 15 and Septemer 15, construction will be halted on the weekends. Some nighttime detours at southbound exit ramps will be necessary, according to the release.

Drivers are encouraged to check the DOT’s traffic information website at www.511nj.org for real-time travel information, the release says.
