Will the World End this December? Find Out!

According to the Mayan calendar, the world will come to an end this December. Do you think that is true, or do you think it is just another normal calendar year?

Mayan scholar Joanne Baron will be discussing this belief at Monmouth County Library Headquarters in Manalapan Township on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m.

She will talk about how the idea of the world ending in 2012 has grown in popularity over the years, how the idea spread, and also discuss what the Mayan Calendar actually says about the subject.

Baron, who is currenty a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania, has excavated with the Penn Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology at the site of La Corona in Guatemala. Currently, Baron is writing her dissertation on Classic Mayan patron deities and their political significance.

The Penn Museum is located on the University of Pennsylvania campus and is celebrating 125 years. The museum is holding a "Lords of Time" exhibit now through January 13, 2012. This exhibit showcases the Mayan calendar and also features artifacts that were recently excavated by Penn Museum archaeologists in Copan, Honduras.
