Township kindergarten students begin school Thursday

Her new pink high-tops are unblemished. His new shorts haven't a single wrinkle.

Primped and preened young scholiasts at on Thursday morning stood in their first single-file line awaiting the start a long academic journey, as Principal William Carson shepherded the controlled commotion of children exiting buses past the temporarily stalled convoy of incoming kindergarteners.

While the majority of Wall Township pupils attended the first day of school on Wednesday, youngest students had an extra day of vacation.

Thursday was the first day of school for students entering the and kindergarten classes at the district's four elementary schools. And at Allenwood, the 38 newcomers were ready.

"We'll have a full house today,'' Carson said. "It was a smooth opening yesterday, and now we're going to have the kindergarten join us.''

The staggered start days are designed to give the young students a chance to ease into the school environment, Carson said.

Kindergarteners and Primary School students had an opportunity to inspect their classrooms, desks and cubbies during school on Wednesday during an open house-type event at each of the schools, officials have said.

But Thursday was the big show. At Allenwood, that show was delayed a bit while awaiting a bus that had lagged just a bit.

Christine Piermattei, Allenwood kindergarten teacher, counted heads with some support from "Chester,'' a raccoon hand puppet, and led the group into the school -- the first steps of a portion of the Class of 2025.
