Brick Schools Open Today for Classes

School facilities largely spared from damage by Hurricane Irene

It's time to dust off the notebooks, pencils and calculators. Brick schools open their doors to students for the 2011-12 school year Tuesday.

Board of Education President Sharon Kight told Brick Patch that all of the township's schools made it through Hurricane Irene well and each will be open on time.

There are a few changes, mostly by way of state mandate, that students will experience heading into the new school year. Three high school classes, Integrated Science, Introduction to Business and Personal Finance, will be replaced by Environmental Science and Financial Literacy, both of which students will be required to take in order to graduate.

Additionally, the Brick district is complying with the state's new . Training has begun for all of the district's approximately 1,500 employees who have contact with children, and each school has a designated specialist tasked with administering the policy.

I am used to that, Stacy... happens every year. But 6:37 am for school that starts at 7:45 is crazy! I think they gave us the wrong time on the bus pass. He was out there with the high school kids.

Does anyone see it as a problem that the high school gets out at a normal lunch time? I wonder why our kids experiment with drugs and sex... No supervision for too long.

the schools are not sitting services, that is the parents job

Drove by a school bus stop today, it was obvious it was kindergärtners on their way to their first day of school. I couldn't help laughing to myself, it looked more like a bunch of midgets heading for a lunar landing! What's with the backpacks that are almost bigger than the kids? Back in the day all we needed was a paper lunch sack with the grease stain on the side from the mystery sandwich mom packed for later in the day. I can't imagine why a five year old needs a backpack for school?

I remember those days too Joseph but these days even the Kindergartners get homework. Heck my son was getting homework in Pre-school and needed a backpack to carry all the projects home in!
