First Of School District Budget Presentations Tonight

District plans on tailoring budget talks to each school this year

The school district tonight begins its planned series of budget presentations, kicking off the public talks at the Primary School, 2500 Bedford Corners Lane.

School Principal and Director of Special Services Patricia Piserchia will lead tonight’s presentation, which is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

Rather than giving the same presentation multiple times, the district is tailoring budget presentations specifically to individual schools, district Assistant Superintendent Sandra Brower said.

Each school principal is responsible for creating a separate budget presentation which will emphasize how the 2011-12 budget will affect that school, Brower has said.

"We're very excited to embrace this new idea where parents can learn about the school district budget from their school's principal,'' Brower said in a telephone interview Thursday. "We believe it will provide an opportunity to make a stronger connection between parents and our principals and allow them to understand how our schools are funded."

The district’s $61 million budget, supported by a proposed $56,829,239 tax levy, also comes with a separate, cut under the spending plan. (.)

On a home valued at $312,700 – the township average – the 2011-12 tax bill would be $4,871.87, an increase of  $156.35 over last year’s $4,715.52 bill, under the proposed spending plan.

The school tax bill is only one part of the overall tax burden, which also includes county, municipal and fire district taxes. .

The budget proposes to keep all current programs, shed two administrative positions and spend $1.8 million on roofing at the three elementary schools and the high school, in addition to a $200,000 gym floor replacement.
