Monmouth University President to Retire in 2013

Paul G. Gaffney will step down next year

Monmouth University President Paul G. Gaffney II will retire next year, the university announced Monday.

After 10 years of service, Gaffney's final day will be on June 30, 2013.

“I want to thank the students of Monmouth University and an unusually supportive Board of Trustees for allowing Linda and me to serve this  university for nearly a decade so far.  It has been rewarding beyond description,” Gaffney said in a release.  “Monmouth has been served well over the last 30 years by presidents who rotate approximately every 10 years. Now, while the university is thriving, is the best time to search for a new leader and then introduce new ideas.”

Monmouth University Board of Trustees Chair Robert B. Sculthorpe said a search committee will conduct a nationwide search for Gaffney's successor in the upcoming weeks.

Gaffney became the university’s seventh president in July 2003.

Under his leadership, Monmouth University constructed the $57 million Multipurpose Activity Center, debt-free; oversaw the largest capital campaign drive in Monmouth University’s history, which raised more than $50 million; and established its first doctoral program.

Monmouth University facilities have undergone major improvements during Gaffney's tenure. They include the construction of a new residence hall, new art building, additions and renovations to Monmouth University Library; Edison Science Building and Howard Hall; renovations of Woods Theatre and upgrades to the Pollak Theatre and Gallery; and the addition of lights to the soccer field.
