MRSA Case At Wall High School

Extra precautions, cleaning undertaken, letter says

District officials have informed parents of students that one confirmed case of MRSA has been identified at the school, according to a letter from Interim Superintendent Stephanie Bilenker.

The letter, sent to parents Thursday, says one case of the drug-restistant bacterial infection has been found in the school.

It does not say whether the infection was found in a student or staff. It also does not say when the infection was discovered.

"We are going above and beyond our normal cleaning and disinfecting routine," Bilenker says in the letter.

Additional custodial staff were assigned to the school beginning Wednesday, using a heavy duty cleaner known to kill the MRSA bacteria to disinfect the school, wiping down all flat surfaces -- including desks, chairs tables lockers, walls and floors. High risk areas like locker rooms, bathrooms, weight rooms and nurses' offices have been targeted for a more thorough cleaning, Bilenker says.

"I am confident that these proactive measures will be a profound help in preventing further occurrences of MRSA in our district," Bilenker says in the letter.
