Third MRSA Case Found In Wall Township Schools This Month

For the third time this month workers are scrubbing down a Wall Township school after another student has contracted a contagious, drug-resistant infection.

District officials have identified a case of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aurius, or MRSA, at the high school, according to a letter sent home to parents Tuesday.

It is the second case found at the high school and the third in the school district this month. The third was in early October at Central School.

In a letter sent to parents, interim schools Superintendent Stephanie Bilenker said the district is “going above and beyond’’ its normal cleaning routine to root out potential contagions and that extra custodial staff has been assigned to the high school Tuesday night.

MRSA is more difficult to treat than other bacterial infections because it is resistant to many commonly-used antibiotics, Bilenker said in the letter.
