Blewett Auto Racing Continues Winning Tradition

Big brother John Blewett III, a Jersey Shore auto racing legend, died in a racing accident six years ago.

It was a family affair at Wall Stadium on Saturday as Jimmy Blewett won the race named for his late brother who died in a Connecticut racing accident six years ago.

Jimmy Blewett, of Howell, took  the checkered flag at the John Blewett III Memorial 76-lap race at the Route 34 track. It was the younger Blewett’s fifth win in as many appearances, track officials said.

“This race always means a lot to our family and it is one race that I always want to win,” Blewett said. “On the track I just gave a couple of guys the same thing they gave me. All in all it was a good race.”

Chris Hamilton, of Oakland, and Howell’s Eric Mauriello battled almost constantly for the lead early in the race. Blewett moved up to third from his sixth-place starting spot despite that his car was nursing a braking problem.

Hamilton remained the pace-setter as Mauriello and Blewett swapped second spot on every restart. With just four laps remaining, Blewett dove to the inside lane to take the lead before Hamilton and Mauriello touched and hammered the third turn rail one lap later.

Blewett drove the final three laps to the win, with Steven Reed and Chas Okerson, both of Freehold, in second and third. Holmdel’s Andrew Krause and Christian LaCicero of Lavallette were fourth and fifth.
