Knights' Korner

Knights' Korner is a weekly post that highlights the week in Wall High School Sports. This edition features the week of October 12-19.

Wall Football: The Knights head into their bye week standing at 2-4 under first-year head coach Nick Gregorio. They traveled to Matawan last Saturday and lost 21-7 to the Huskies. Junior Chris Quinlin scoring the only touchdown for Wall. Their achilles heel this year has been giving up big plays and it was prevalent in this loss, giving up 34- and 55-yard touchdowns. They host Ocean Saturday, Oct. 27 at 1:00 p.m., their homecoming game.

Wall Girls Soccer: In their first Shore Conference tournament game, the Lady Knights fought back from being down 1-0 against Shore Regional to score three unanswered goals from sophomore Heather Arbachesky, junior Rachel Leyh, and senior Casey Zalewski, her team leading 17th. On Tuesday, the team traveled north to Piscataway and lost 2-1, giving up both goals in the second half. Junior Madi Mitchell had four saves and Arbachesky scored the lone Wall goal, her 8th, assisted by senior Emily Savacool.

Wall Boys Soccer: The boys played their first Shore Conference game against Shore Regional High School, winning 2-1. Senior Eric Doucette had both goals. On Monday, they played the number two ranked Colts Neck and played out a 0-0 tie. They play the winner of Jackson Memorial and Southern Tuesday for a spot in the semi finals. Wall Field Hockey: Head Coach Nancy Gross has been the head of Wall Field Hockey for more than 40 years now and the postseason is nothing new to her. They played Middletown North in their first Shore Conference Tournament game, winning 3-0. Junior Sophie Lozowski scored two and junior Nicole Kuerzi added another, her team leading 23rd. On Monday they beat Neptune 6-0, erupting with four second half goals. The 7th seeded Lady Knights travel to the second seeded Rumson Fair Haven for their quarter final game on Saturday.

Wall Girls Volleyball: The A North girls volleyball division champion Wall Lady Knights are still rolling through the season. They had a tough matchup on Thursday against Red Bank Catholic, needing three sets to beat the Caseys. Senior Olivia Hayes had a season best 16 kills. On Tuesday they defeated a winless Long Branch team without breaking a sweat, winning both sets 25-6. Hayes had 11 kills. Wall plays Barnegat and Manchester next week ahead of their Shore Conference Tournament.

Wall Gymnastics: The Wall gymnastics team had a tough week, dropping all three results to fall 5-5 on the year. Wednesday they lost to Point Pleasant Boro and Neptune. The loss to Neptune was especially difficult, coming less than a point short, losing 98.3-97.65. Freshman Jena Block shined, winning the vault against both schools and all around against Boro. On Monday they played Shore Regional and lost 100.575-96.35, but Block had the third highest score of the meet, with 32.775.

Wall Girls Tennis: They continued their tremendous season this week, beating Freehold Boro on Tuesday to notch their 15th win. The team is led by junior Artemis Tapliga who is 15-2 this year as first singles.

Wall Cross Country: Boys cross country is having a tough 2012 campaign, dropping all five of their meets. Their next meet is October 23 at Neptune, looking to break into the win column.
