Wall Ice Hockey: Oh how the mighty have fallen. The Knights suffered their first defeat of the season on Saturday against Freehold Township, 4-2. Wall continued to stutter, tying Robinsville 1-1 on Tuesday. They finished the week on a high, though, beating West Windsor South 3-0 taking them to 11-1-2 on the season. Sophomore Jeff Morgan was held to just an assist against Freehold Township and Robinsville, but found the back of the net again against West Windsor South, scoring twice. If it weren't for senior goaltender Troy Klahre against Robbinsville, Wall probably would have lost that game, too. Klahre stepped up with a big time performance, seeing 37 shots and saving 36 of them. Against West Windsor South, Klahre got his second shutout on the season, with 20 saves.
Wall Boys Basketball: Wall improved to 7-4 on the week going three for three including a 50-49 thriller against division foe Matawan on Tuesday. The Knights were down a pair when sophomore Trent Mitchell hit a triple for the win. That treble was part of a 17 point effort from Mitchell. Head coach Mike Puorro said he was trying to get his senior big man Kevin Waters to be more aggressive on the block and Waters listened, getting another double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore point guard Brenden Barcas had 5 points but more importantly, he had 4 assists. Then on Wednesday, Wall beat a decent Monmouth Regional team 60-55. Mitchell had his fullest game of the season. Not only did he lead the Knights in scoring as he usually does, but he had 8 rebounds and team highs in assists, 5, and steals, 3. Waters had his second double-double- in as many nights, with 11 points and 10 boards. Waters had his third big day of the week, with a third double-double of the week with another dominating performance with 13 points, 12 rebounds and 2 assists. Wall is 7-0 this season when Waters has double digit rebounds. As long as he keeps his play at this high level, Mitchell keeps getting his points and Barcas continues to handle the ball, this Wall team has a real chance to make some noise, which would be the first time in a while Wall High School basketball is relevant again.
Wall Girls Basketball: The Lady Knights kept their heads above the .500 water, getting to 6-5 on the year, with a win this week against Monmouth Regional 51-36 and a loss against Matawan 32-27. Against Matawan, Wall didn't see a double digit scorer, with Ellen Dougherty leading the team with 8 points. Against Monmouth Regional, junior Sydney Darby snatched home a game high 9 rebounds. Wall Wrestling: Last Saturday Wall won the Team Title at the Elizabeth Tournament. The Knights had a bunch of medal winners. Those who took first place honors: Denzel Tovar, Josh Glantzman, Brett Donner, Drew Donner and Tyler Romanelli. Jack Wishart, Dan Kinsella and Nick Van Glahn were second place medal winners. After seeing team victory at the tournament, they won both meets. First, a close 36-31 match against Matawan, then a 59-9 dismantling of Freehold Boro. Sophomores Denzel Tovar and Jack Wishart won both of their matches.
