Knights' Korner

Knights' Korner is a weekly post highlighting the week in Wall High School athletics. This edition is December 8-14.

Wall Ice Hockey- In their only game of the week, Wall took care of business Wednesday night against Monsignor Donovan, 5-2. After a scoreless first period, Mon Don took the lead a few minutes into the second. That lead lasted just 30 seconds as Wall knotted it up through freshman Noah Ziegler’s first goal of his young varsity career. Mon Don retook the lead a few minutes later but the resilient Knights fought back, and after that it was all Wall, spearheaded by sophomore Jeff Morgan. Morgan scored the next two goals to give Wall the lead, and they would never look back. After a goal by senior Luke Stohrer, his first of the season after having 9 assists, Morgan iced it with an empty net goal with 23 seconds left. That empty netter was Morgan’s 10th goal in just five games this season, completing his second hat trick. Pairing those 10 goals with his 7 assists, Morgan is leading the Knights in points early on with 17. Senior net minder Troy Klahre had a slow night, facing 18 shots, the fewest he’s seen in this young season. Klahre was big in keeping the Knights in the game early, and not letting Mon Don back in it late. The senior is on his way to a very successful season. He has faced 120 shots, posting a .917 save percentage and just 1.6 goals against per game. Most importantly though, all of these exceptional performances by Klahre, Morgan and Co. have been translated into a perfect 5-0 record. Their next game is Saturday December 15 at Jackson Liberty.

Wall Swimming- Both the boys and the girls went two for two in their meets this week, each defeating Neptune and Red Bank Regional. The boys defeated Neptune 105-65 and dismantled RBR without breaking a sweat. Standout performers for Wall were Shane Maypother, who has won all eight meets he has been apart of this season. Sophomore Grant Foster is also undefeated, while posting a very impressive 23.6 second 50 freestyle en route to victory against Neptune. As for the girls, they also cruised to victories this week. Their meet against Neptune ended 122-48 and beat RBR in similar fashion. Sophomore Danielle Griggs has picked up right where she left off last season, undefeated in all of her races this year. Freshman Moira McGevna had an impressive week, matching Griggs by going undefeated in all of the races she participated in as well. Both teams stand at 3-1, only losing to Ocean, and winning their last three meets.
