NJEA Cancels Atlantic City Convention

After Sandy batters Atlantic City, the state teachers' union cancels its annual gathering there.

New Jersey’s teachers won’t gather in Atlantic City for their annual convention for the first time in 158 years.  The damage and ongoing problems left behind by monster storm Sandy forced the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA) to cancel its Nov. 8-9 conference at the shore town. NJEA said its convention is the largest gathering of its kind worldwide, and the sheer size helped make the final decision to cancel. “The NJEA Convention is a massive event, involving tens of thousands of people,” NJEA President Barbara Keshishian said. “We concluded it was simply not advisable to try to have that many people on the roads and using public transportation while so many communities are struggling to restore power and basic services to their …

Christie Kicks Off Beach Season with Jersey Shore Visit

Governor held a press conference outside of Resorts Casino in Atlantic City on Thursday.

With music and the sun blaring on the Atlantic City boardwalk outside of Resorts Casino, Gov. Chris Christie discussed the importance of tourism for the state, announced a potential law that would bring sports gambling to the Jersey shore and spoke about the safety and the reputation of the city during a press conference Thursday afternoon, May 24. Christie announced that he is submitting sports gambling regulations that he predicts may come into effect in the fall of this year, but he also said he expects there to be a fight over the law and that he would not be surprised to see the issue hit the courts. Atlantic City: Free Beaches

Permits required for group gatherings

Visitors to Atlantic City beaches can enjoy the 2012 season without paying for a beach badge. However, permits are required for group activities. Surfing is allowed on the following designated beaches: Crystal Beach at New Hampshire Avenue; Delaware Avenue Beach; and Downtown Beach at Raleigh Avenue. Surfing lessons are available, and lifeguards are not available at surfing beaches. Surfers are advised not to surf alone. Kayaking and windsurfing are allowed on the Jackson Avenue beach, although no lifeguards are on hand and you must bring your own equipment. It is a no-bathing zone. Boogie boards and bodysurfing are allowed on any bathing beach, depending on weather conditions. All boogie boards must have a leash. Fishing takes place on …

Pellegrino Retires from MMA

Point Pleasant fighter loses by TKO in first round of Bellator match

  Point Pleasant's Kurt Pellegrino was defeated in a Saturday evening mixed martial arts fight and announced his retirement from the sport. Pellegrino was dropped by a hard punch 50 seconds into the first round of his return to fighting by 25-year-old Brazilian Patricky Freire at Bellator 59 at Caesar's in Atlantic City. Pellegrino was felled early by a hard punch, dropping to the ground and grabbing Freire's leg. Freire continued to rain down punches as Pellegrino attempted to work a takedown. To the shock of the sold out crowd and Pellegrino himself, the referee broke up the fight, declaring Freire the winner by technical knockout (TKO) while Pellegrino still appeared to be defending himself.
