Countdown to Memorial Day

Avon Parking Rules Switch May 1

Diagonal parking, not parallel parking, takes effect

It's time to change direction: parking in Avon will switch from parallel parking to diagonal parking spots starting May 1. The annual switch to diagonal parking spots comes every May 1 on designated streets, and lasts through Nov. 14. Parallel parking is in effect from Nov. 15 to April 30 annually, according to borough ordinance. It's not the only borough law in effect starting May 1. Avon Mayor: Pavilion Lease Is Illegal

Avon Mayor Robert Mahon says the lease is illegal and Hurricane Sandy gave the town the cover it needed to terminate it

At an afternoon workshop session of the Avon Board of Commissioners attended by an audience of about 70 mainly supporters of Rob Fishman, Avon Pavilion owner, Mahon interjected into a public comment period his reasons for making the controversial move a week ago. UPDATE: State Investigating Brown Water Off Monmouth Beaches

Flyover on Thursday found no evidence of algae bloom, DEP says

Because of reports of greenish brown, dirty-looking water at the beaches around Asbury Park, Avon and Bradley Beach, the state Department of Environmental Protection is looking into the water quality off Shore Area beaches, according to its website. The Monmouth County Health Department has identified a variety of species of dinoflagellates -- planktonic plants -- in the waters at the those beaches. These microscopic plants are generally not toxic to humans but in very heavy concentrations may be toxic to fish and shellfish because they remove oxygen from the water, according to the DEP. Additional samples are being collected by the DEP's Bureau of Marine Water Monitoring and at the beaches by the Monmouth County Health Department, …
