Kindergarten orientation day calms students', parents' nerves
When the school bus arrives at the home of 5-year-old Ayden Sluder Thursday morning, there will be no surprises for him on his first day of school. He already knows how to buckle his seatbelt, to listen to the bus driver, talk quietly and walk – not run -- on and off the bus. When he arrives at Old Mill School, he knows where he’s going to sit in Mrs. Conway’s class. He knows where his cubby is, and where to put his lunchbox. He knows lots of other things, too, such as the importance of raising his hand, taking turns and pushing in his chair when he’s not sitting in it. It’s a class rule -- number four on a list of six posted on a wall in Mrs. Conway’s kindergarten classroom. “I forgot to do that,” Ayden said as he read the rules during an…

Ready or not, parents, it's time to get back in the swing
Welcome back, parents of school-age children. Welcome back to life. It’s been nice, right, the break from reality? A summer full of lounging in bed well past quarter-to-sunrise, not planning what hot lunch your little one will eat and which ones you’ll have to pack; not worrying who is going to pick up whom and where this one has to be at 3 p.m. and that one at 4:30 p.m. A season without planning everyone’s dinner while the coffee’s brewing before breakfast, and how in the world are we going to take care of that science project at this late date? It’s pretty easy to get used to waking in the morning without feeling like you’ve just been shot out of a cannon, right? As parents throughout Wall Township today shepherd their children through …

Hundreds of district employees come to the high school for a 'welcome back' assembly
In what was equal parts pep rally and group hug, Schools Superintendent Daniel Simon addressed hundreds of district teachers, administrators, bus drivers and support staff Tuesday to kick off the new school year. All district employees were bussed into the high school for a “Welcome Back” session hosted by the new superintendent – the first time such an event had been held in more than a decade, Simon said. Although the first day for students is Wednesday, teachers reported to work Tuesday. Simon, who seemed intent on recognizing everyone in the packed high school gymnasium by name during the hour-long assembly, thanked scads of teachers, custodians, union officials and paraprofessionals for a variety of accomplishments or contributions to…

This mom around town is planning back to school lunches and has some tips to share.
Back to school means back to packing lunches. Yikes! I have such a hard time coming up with new ideas. Peanut butter and jelly gets boring. Nutella has been a great backup especially paired with some strawberries, but that gets old too. Regardless, both options will be in my pantry for busy mornings but I need some more interesting solutions. Do you have any good lunch box ideas? I asked around and some other moms shared their tips with me. Elise S., a Cinnaminson mom of two, told me how she brightens up peanut butter and jelly or tuna sandwiches with a little trick. “I sometimes cut them into different shapes with cookie cutters or use a little gadget that cuts the sandwich into a circle with no crusts.” Kids love the “no crust” …

Incoming students to Monmouth University may soon have a new option for housing, as the West Long Branch Zoning Board of Adjustment heard a case on Thursday evening for a new residence hall to be built on the campus. The new residence hall would be built on what is currently Lot 6 at Monmouth University, directly across from the school’s library. According to the architect in charge of this project, Mykhaylo Kulymych, this would be a three-story residence hall. “Along with the three floors, there would be a ground floor that would have a laundry, storage area, lounge and a bookstore annex,” Kulymych noted. When asked by board members if this would be a public area, Monmouth University engineer and planner William Fitzgerald noted it would…
