Less than one week until major tourist season
Lake water level still very low since Hurricane Sandy
Pumped out after Hurricane Sandy, water is slowing filling Silver Lake in Belmar, but an algae bloom has formed there. Borough Councilman Brian Magovern said the lake is shallow, which mean a boat that usually delivers a chemical to prevent algae blooms was unable to do so. As a result, the algae began forming this spring, and particularly on the west side of Silver Lake is thick with green algae. Photo gallery of activity and opened Ocean Avenue
Though several blocks are still closed, a large portion of Ocean Avenue in Belmar is open and bicyclists and pedestrians are taking to the oceanfront. For most of the winter, Ocean Avenue was closed due to Hurricane Sandy reconstruction of the boardwalk. But now that boards are lain for much of the project, many blocks were reopened and it's the southernmost portions of the roadway that remain closed in Belmar. Here's a gallery from local photographer Paul Spennrath of some of the activity.

'Buy a Board' campaign deadline is the end of the month
The last call on Belmar's boardwalk 'Buy a Board'campaign is April 30. The campaign has had donors from all over the world contributing varying amounts, which would fund the rebuilding of Belmar's boardwalk. However, the borough has set a deadline on when the last "Big Kahunas" and other donors can contribute, in order to get their name listed in time on the boardwalk project as givers. The last date, Mayor Matt Doherty said, will be April 30. Donations range from $25 to more than $5,000. The total amount raised is more than $550,000. Donations can be made online at the borough's website, here.
