Many storm victims have become Sandy zombies
They are easy to spot. They don't smile much. They look tired. They are tired. They are numb. They are the Sandy zombies. They are fried emotionally and physically from half a year of battling to go home, if they still have a home to go to. I am a Sandy zombie. Is it possible it's been half a year since that horrific day and night when Superstorm Sandy blasted the Jersey Shore and changed some lives forever? Six months since we left our Bayville home with three terrified cats and made our way to family in Toms River? Six months since we've been living in a basement? We knew Sandy was going to be bad, even when we evacuated at noon on Oct. 29. Trees were already toppling in Pine Beach, taking down power lines. But we didn't know then we …

Dunes breached in a number of sections of the state park during Superstorm Sandy; sections of park slated to open sometime next week
Surf fisherman often trudged through the sand on Two-Bit Road at Island Beach State Park to make their way around the towering dunes, on their way to the beach and the waves. But there is little in the way of a cut now, since Superstorm Sandy swamped the park on Oct. 29. And in many sections of Island Beach, the carefully cultivated, cherished dunes - strengthened by beach grass and protected by snow fence - are no more. "There's a lot more devastation at this end of the beach," said Area Supervisor Ray Bukowski, as he steered his Ford F-250 down the nearly deserted beach in the park's Northern Natural Area. The beach is littered with pilings, crab pots, storm debris and even a roller coaster car from nearby Seaside Heights. The scene is …

Police say men threw marijuana out of the window of Lexus before traffic stop
Two men have been arrested in the wake of a probe into drug activity in the Pheasant Drive area of Bayville. Detectives from the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and the Berkeley Township Police Department conducted the investigation on Aug. 22, Ocean County Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford said. The officers attempted a motor vehicle stop near Scott Drive during the investigation. The occupants of the 1992 gray Lexus threw a "quantity of marijuana" out of the car windows, Capt. Jack Sramaty said. When authorities eventually stopped the car on Scott Drive, they recovered some of the marijuana, a stun gun and a small amount of cash, Sramaty said. David Walford, 22, Barnegat Boulevard, Barnegat, was charged with possession of marijuana, …

Berkeley Township Animal Control snares a three-foot crocodile slithering down East Longport Avenue in Ocean Gate
Police Chief Reece J. Fisher has seen a lot of things on the streets of Ocean Gate during his years as a police officer. But never a crocodile. "I've seen snakes, deer, big turtles, but a crocodile? That's a first," he said. It was a first for Berkeley Township Animal Control Officer John Bober too. A resident saw the reptile making its way down the 100 block of East Longport Avenue shortly after midnight on July 17 and called police. "The street was warm," Fisher said. "I would imagine it was attracted to that." By the time Berkeley Township Animal Control officers arrived on the scene, the animal had already been nudged into a 55-gallon drum, Bober said. "He wasn't that rambunctious," Bober said. "He seemed kind of calm and tame." Animal…

Dona Timoney, stricken in Double Trouble State Park almost two weeks ago, died Wednesday night, friend says
BERKELEY TOWNSHIP, NJ - It was a story that warmed many hearts around the country. Dona Rae Timoney had rescued her pit bull mix "Lilly" from a North Carolina "drug house" last year. Owner and dog became extremely close. Lilly returned the favor two weeks ago, after Dona collapsed on a sugar sand path near the cranberry bogs in Double Trouble State Park. The little dog ran up the path, her leash dragging behind her. Bayville resident Frank Delarosa found Lilly, picked her up and started towards the park office. But Lilly squirmed and Delarosa put her down. She sped back down the path she had just come from and led him to Dona, who was unconscious. Dona, 51, was first taken to Community Medical Center, then airlifted to St. Barnabas Medical…

12-year-old Deven Rusnak and his family face sometimes hourly challenges dealing with his disease
Sherry Kriss-Dillane couldn't figure it out. Her usually good-natured 10-year-old son Deven was turning "nasty," subject to wild mood swings. He sassed his mother and stepfather frequently. The boy was often tired, had headaches and stomachaches. He was always thirsty. "He was just throwing words at me," she said. "He was very, very argumentative. The only word I can come up with is nasty. We had no idea what was wrong." Kriss-Dillane suggested counseling. Deven refused. "I'm not going, and you can't make me," he said. When Kriss-Dillane asked him what was wrong, Deven burst into tears. "I don't know, and I can't control it," he told his mother. Things came to a head one night shortly before Christmas 2009. Kriss-Dillane was headed out to …

Is the snow season really the happiest season of all? "Sara C." said she didn't get a Brick plow until 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. The snow fell on Sunday. Her husband missed three days of work because he was too busy clearing it all out. "What do we pay taxes for?" she wrote. "No one cares about the people who live behind the 7-Eleven off of Chambersbridge Road in Brick." "Kelly," another Brick resident, said she had to walk through four feet of snow drifts to be picked up for work on Midstreams Road. "I saw a plow on the next street over on a plowed road - I begged him to go one street over and plow my road," she said. Did it work? "His plow would not be able to move the snow since it's so high!!!!!!" And it's not just in Brick, where a litany …

Mitigation and 'Substantial damage' are two different animals in the aggregate sum. Thus, if you had $100,000 in damages, I would think that you would add elevation on top of that when applying for the CDBG.   more ›
