What's next for the BOE now that a member has resigned?
Now that John Tavis has resigned, what does the Board of Education do now? According to state law, the board will have 60 days from the date of the resignation to fill the vacancy, normally by a majority vote of the board. If the board fails to do so, the vacancy could be filled by the county superintendent, the law reads. The Wall Township Board of Education bylaws say that the board will publicly notice for the vacancy and solicit candidates willing to fill it. The board will then interview candidates for the vacancy. This may or may not be done in public session. The vote to appoint a candidate, however, will be in public session, the bylaws read. Whoever is appointed to the seat will serve until the board’s next organization meeting, …

Just three months after election to a three-year term, Tavis calls it quits
In a surprise development at Tuesday’s school board budget meeting, recently elected school board member John Tavis announced his intention to resign his seat after serving just three months of a three-year term. Tavis, who in November was elected in an uncontested race to a three-year term, will quit the board officially when he delivers a letter to Business Administrator Brian Smyth -- an action he said would be completed within a week. Tavis said he simply did not have the time to dedicate to the position that he feels it deserves. Tuesday’s meeting will be his last, Tavis said in an interview following the meeting. In a short prepared speech Tavis thanked the board members for their support during his 23 months on the 9-member panel. …
Unanimous vote to adopt budget under cap with significant tech purchases, hiring
The Board of Education on Tuesday unanimously approved the budget for the upcoming school year following a presentation by administrators and a public hearing at a special meeting held at the Intermediate School. The vote to adopt the budget was 8-0. Board member Donald Herbert, who was present prior to the start of the meeting, left the building before the board was called to order. He did not return. No explanation was given for his absence. The vote followed about an hour-long presentation by district administrators that varied little from the presentation given on Monday. Some budget numbers were changed slightly from Monday’s presentation, but those changes were largely insignificant. The $68,462,470 total budget comes with just shy…

Filling seat vacated by former Vice President Laurie Cannon
The Board of Education at its regular meeting Tuesday is expected to fill the seat left by Laurie Cannon, who abruptly resigned in late August. The school board’s agenda calls for nominations for Cannon’s seat early in the order of business. Cannon’s term, which expires in 2013, cannot legally be left vacant until January, when a new member will finish out her term. Whoever is appointed will serve only until January. Nominations will be made, then a majority of the eight-member board will decide which among the nominees – if there are more than one – will fill Cannon’s seat. Next month, however, voters will choose which of the seven candidates who filed to run for the remainder of Cannon’s term will be seated in January. Kristen Casais, …

10-minute limit on public comment proposed in new bylaw
The Board of Education is mulling a new bylaw that would limit the time a member of the public can speak during its meetings. The board by a unanimous vote on Wednesday introduced a new measure that if passed would for the first time limit to 10 minutes the time allowed each member of the public to speak during the panel’s meetings. That measure, Bylaw #0167, is in large part carved out of its companion bylaw —#0164 — that regulates the conduct of the board’s meetings. The portion regulating public participation would be excised from that law and used to create the new bylaw. Large chunks of the old regulation serve as the basis for the new bylaw, such as addressing only the board president and making supporting documentation available to …
