Embattled Brookdale Community College has a new president following the scandal-ridden 20-year administration of Peter F. Burnham, who pleaded guilty July 24 to theft by deception and two counts of official misconduct amid continued allegations of his improper personal spending habits. He may be headed to prison for at least five years. Dr. Maureen Murphy quietly — and without fanfare — arrived on the Brookdale campus last month. She was the former president of Jacinto College South in Houston. She’s Brookdale’s first female president and was recommended to the board of trustees for the college’s top job by an 11-member committee. The race drew in 146 racers from throughout the state.
Runners from throughout the state raced their way through Brookdale Community College Sunday, combating not only the humidity but all forms of prejudice in the inaugural 5K Challenge for Chhange Run/Walk. A total of 146 racers crossed the finish line in front of The Center for Holocaust, Human Rights & Genocide Education (Chhange)’s new facility adjacent to Brookdale’s main Bankier Library. Freeholder director repeated call for resignations after former Brookdale Community College President Peter Burnham pleaded guilty to official misconduct charges.
Tuesday's guilty plea from former Brookdale Community College President Peter Burnham has some calling for more financial accountability from the college's board of trustees. Burnham, 68 of Colts Neck, pleaded guilty on Tuesday before Judge Thomas F. Scully to two counts of official misconduct and one count of theft by deception. Prosecutors say Burnham used credit cards issued to him by Brookdale to purchase more than $10,000 worth of items. According to News 12, Burnham made $216,000 in his position at Brookdale. Freeholder Director John Curley, who became the community college's liaison in January, 2011, said he was the one to call attention to personal spending with college money from Burnham's office. Former Brookdale Community College President Peter Burnham appeared in criminal court Tuesday, accused of abusing his power as head of the county college. Burnham, 68 of Colts Neck, pleaded guilty before Judge Thomas F. Scully to two counts of official misconduct and one count of theft by deception. Prosecutors say Burnham used credit cards issued to him by Brookdale to purchase more than $10,000 worth of items. Under the terms of the plea agreement, Burnham faces a maximum of five years in prison. Brookdale Community College Board of Trustees is seeking Monmouth County applicants to take a four-year term on the board.
The Brookdale Community College Trustee Search Committee is seeking resumes for an open seat on the college’s Board of Trustees. Applicants should be a Monmouth County resident of at least four years and be knowledgeable in higher education. This unpaid position is for a term of four years. Brookdale and its Long Branch satellite want to get you a job this month. On Feb. 24 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Brookdale Long Branch Higher Education Center, 213 Broadway, will host a free job fair. Priority pass holders will be welcomed from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. with open admission from 10 a.m to 2 p.m. The priority passes will be issued in advance and through program sponsors to those who are enrolled in a verified job readiness program or attend a resumé and interview skill workshop. When Long Branch resident Megan Beckmann wanted to beef up her credentials in early childhood education, she knew Georgian Court University could provide her with the right classes. But instead of studying at the Lakewood University, she turned to Brookdale Community College and its NJ Coastal Communiversity, which has an alliance with five New Jersey universities. By taking classes at Brookdale's Wall Higher Education Center, Beckmann was able to save tuition and take evening classes while maintaining her day job working with special needs children. The OceanFirst Foundation of Toms River hosted a reception Tuesday night, recognizing 140 college-bound seniors from Ocean and Monmouth Counties
Last year, the OceanFirst Foundation decided to give back to the community of high school graduates through the creation of a scholarship program. This year, the foundation continued to support higher education, as the next batch of graduates plan to attend college in the fall. On Tuesday night, 140 shore-area students attending Brookdale Community College, Georgian Court University, Monmouth University and Ocean County College gathered at Doolan’s Shore Club in Spring Lake Heights to receive a combined $200,000 in college scholarships.
