Nathan Charles Norman is a 6-year-old boy who knows quite a lot about heroes and villains. His heroes wear uniforms. Police, firefighters, EMTs and any other emergency responder. They show up when there’s trouble, help and sometimes save people. They have Nathan’s unending admiration. Nathan also knows about villains, because he’s fought one nearly his whole life.  Nathan was diagnosed with brain cancer when he was three. An operation removed a little more than half the tumor, which continues to grow. Doctors later found an inoperable spinal cord tumor. Healthy Living Can Prevent Breast Cancer

Research shows good nutrition and exercise can help prevent breast cancer.

You might be able to find help fighting breast cancer and other types of cancers at your local grocery store and fitness centers, according to the research findings of Dr. Marian Neuhouser, Ph.D, RD.  Dr. Neuhouser is a nutritional epidemiologist with a background in nutritional sciences. She is an investigator at Seattle’s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Her research is focused on lifestyle factors such as nutrition and physical activity. Howell Girl Being Honored at Shillelagh Club Saturday

St. Baldrick's event raises money for children's cancer research

Come "shave it" wih the Shillelagh's on Saturday, Oct. 6, for their annual St. Baldrick's event, which raises money for children's cancer research, organizers said.  The organization will be raising money and encouraging supporters to shave their heads to honor children fighting cancer.  The event begins at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh, 815 16th Avenue, in Belmar.  This year's event will honor Madison Grace Beggs, a Howell resident who lost her battle with brain cancer just last summer, organizers said.  "Madi" was diagnosed in August 2010 at the age of 10 and after a 22-month-long battle that included several operations to remove the tumors, she unfortunately passed on June 22.  (Read more about Madi's tragic yet…

Community Responds To A Call For Help

Hundreds come to aid of Wall woman battling cancer

More than 200 people took a painless test that could save a life Thursday as crowds packed the South Wall Firehouse to support a local woman’s battle with cancer. The parking lot of the Atlantic Avenue firehouse was packed at 6 p.m. as people cued up several deep in line to get tested to see if they were a potential bone marrow match for Wall resident Ann Valerio, who was recently diagnosed with leukemia. Valerio’s doctors recommend that she have a bone marrow transplant, but she has not found a suitable donor. Her daughter is only a partial match, and she is continuing to search for an exact match.
