Around Ocean County and beyond, community members remember Christopher Matlosz
Many in Ocean and Monmouth counties are excepted today to remember a local police officer – a hero and a friend to many – who died two years ago while serving his community. Christopher Matlosz, a Lakewood police officer, was killed at age 27 during a Jan. 14, 2011, patrol. He was gunned down by Jahmell Crockam, then 19, who was eventually convicted in connection with the crime. Authorities searched for two days until the suspect was captured in a Camden apartment by a high-risk entry team. "That's what I should be thinking about — our wedding," said Walsifer, who attended the sentencing despite battling a cold. "The defendant stole that from us." "Mr. Crockam was luckier than Chris. He had the opportunity to be tried by 12. Chris …

Matlosz, who wore badge No. 317, was gunned down on Jan. 14, 2011, while sitting in his car shortly after the start of his shift. The Manchester resident is the first police officer in Ocean County shot and killed while on duty. “People post pictures on Facebook of clocks showing 3:17, to let…
