Hurricane Sandy Aftermath: Just One Neighborhood

Scenes like these are being repeated all over Wall

Belmar Boulevard is moist and slick. It's littered with orange, red and yellow leaves and tree branches of various sizes as I walk along northbound, talking with my neighbors, asking how they fared in the storm.  There are a pair of garbage trucks parked nose to nose at the intersection with Route 34, under the unfunctioning traffic signal, preventing drivers from crossing the state highway -- just like every single intersection in Wall Township's 30-some mile circumference. None has power. Neither do the majority of its 27,000 residents. As I walk along, everyone wants to talk about Hurricane Sandy, about how they were hunkered down as the winds blew down trees in their yards, about the explosion of the nearby electrical transformer that …

All the latest closings and information during Hurricane Sandy

There are no functioning traffic lights in town and the majority of Wall's 26,000 residents are without power at this hour, police said. JCP&L is reporting still around 12,000 customers are without power but a release from the Wall Township Police department puts that number higher, saying a 'majority' is without power. The release was not more specific. The release says that no signaled intersection is working properly within Wall's 30-some square miles. There is a travel ban still in effect, barring non-essential vehicles from the roads until further notice, according to Lt. Walter Pomphrey. Here are the latest highlights in and around town: Police have responded to 281 calls; Firefighters, 108 and EMS 132, Pomphrey said. Power Outages: …

Wall Police Issue Travel Ban

Effective immediately and until further notice

If you're not an emergency responder, stay off the roads, Wall Police say. Effective immediately and until further notice the police have instutited a travel ban on all non-emergency personnel. Because of downed power wires, utility poles, heavy flooding and other hazards, it is impossible to drive any state, county or local road without encountering a hazard or detour, Lt. Walter Pomphrey said. Only essential personnel, emergency service members, and health care professionals should travel and they should use extreme caution, Pomphrey said. To report non emergency conditions such as downed trees, roadway flooding, or any other public works related matter please call 732-280-4380, Pomphrey said. Emergency responders fabulously busy

One call after another. Downed tree here. Arcing power line there. Reports of residents using boats to flee rapidly flooding homes. And the wind continues to howl. There's still more to come. Police have responded to 281 calls as of 8:30 p.m. Firefighters responded to 108 and EMS 132. There's no end in sight. At least not yet. In nearby Belmar, reports are coming in that water is reaching main street from the Ocean and through K Street from the Marina. There are 11,887 customers out of power in Wall Township as of 9:38 p.m. -- that just under half the population. Here are the rest of the highlights: Traffic Lights Out: Bridge Closures: Road Closures:

VIDEO: Truckful of Generators Causes Mayhem In North Wall

Traveling generator sales attracts throngs of people to Camp Evans parking lot

Just like last year, the winds of a hurricane on Monday blew in a freelance generator sales operation out of Ohio. Just like last year, the same generator sales truck attracted throngs of customers queuing up to hand over hundreds of dollars to buy what are likely the only gas-powered generators for miles. But this year, no one was surprised. The dozens of people who crowded around the 14-foot box truck emblazoned with the words "Generator City'' had already paid for their goods and were there to pick up their wares. But how did anyone know? "Facebook,'' said one proud owner of three generators, at around $500 a piece. "These are all pre-ordered.'' That didn't stop the hordes of people from waiting in the pouring rain and pelting wind to …
