Police Checking Drivers for Drinking and Drugs

Checkpoints set up throughout Ocean County all weekend

  Drivers getting stopped at DWI checkpoints this weekend will also be checked for being under the influence of drugs, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor's office. With the start of the busy summer travel season looming, Prosecutor Joseph D. Coronato today announced the continuation of the annual countywide DWI checkpoint program. The program, which supplements local DWI enforcement, consists of staging numerous checkpoints throughout the county. "Most significant for the program this year, is the addition of two drug recognition experts at each checkpoint to detect those under the influence of narcotics," says a prepared statement from the prosecutor's office. The problem though is that many with chronic pain or other ailments take their medication like they should but then drive even though they are in no good condition to do so. Five area people were arrested and charged with various offenses over the past weekend, police said.  Joseph Maneria, 20, of Wall, was arrested and charged with minor marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia around 9:21 p.m. Saturday, Sgt. Heath Bono said. Thomas McFee, 32, of Toms River was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of narcotics following a traffic stop on Route 138 around 9:38 p.m. Saturday, Bono said. A report of a suspicious person resulted in the arrest of a Howell man while numerous drivers were charged with drunk driving during a checkpoint held in town Friday, police said. Michael Noodt, 41, was arrested and charged with an active warrant from the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Department for failure to pay child support following a report of a suspicious person at the New Bedford Road apartment complex at 2028 New Bedford Rd. around 11:52 p.m. Friday, Sgt. A Seaside Heights woman was arrested and charged with drunken driving early Thursday morning, police said. Ruth E. Hit And Run Accident Caps Busy Weekend For Wall Police

Drunken driving, minor drug possession among charges over the weekend

A hit and run accident on Route 138 Sunday capped a busy weekend for Wall Police. Ernesto Segura Jaimez, 23, of Lakewood, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated around 9:45 p.m. Sunday after causing the minor accident on Route 138. No one was injured in the crash, Sgt. Steven Wolter said. Jaimez was found driving eastbound on 18th Avenue shortly after the accident, Wolter said. Patrick Ward, 46, of Lavallette, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated following a traffic stop on Route 34 around 11:41 p.m. Friday. Man hit a fire hydrant on Route 34, police say

A Bloomfield man was arrested and charged with drunken driving after hitting a fire hydrant on Route 34 late Tuesday night, police said. Kevin Zehnder, 52, was stopped around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday after his car veered off the road and struck a fire hydrant, Sgt. Steven Wolter said.  Zehnder also was charged with possession of a small amount of marijuana. Patrolman Dough Borst was the arresting officer, Wolter said.

Freehold Woman Arrested on Drunken Driving Charge

Woman drove off the road and struck a utility pole, police say

A Freehold woman was stopped by police on northbound Route 34 near the Allenwood Circle around 12:41 p.m. Tuesday while she was traveling on the shoulder with a badly damaged tire, police said. Cheryll Mueller, 39, drove off the road and scraped a utility pole at the circle, Sgt. Patrick Connor said. Mueller was stopped just north of the circle and arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated and possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana, Connor said.

Neptune Man Charged With Drunken Driving

Man charged overnight following traffic stop

A 31-year-old Neptune man was arrested and charged with drunken driving overnight, police said. James Lavarin, 31, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated around 3:01 a.m. Friday following a traffic stop at Route 70 and Riverview Drive. Patrolwoman Amy Drackwicz was the arresting officer, Sgt. Steven Wolter said. Lavarin was charged and released with a court date, Wolter said.

Two Charged With Drunken Driving Overnight

In separate incidents, two area men arrested early morning Thursday

Two area men were arrested and charged with drunken driving in separate incidents overnight Wednesday, police said. Mostafa H. Abou-Aref, 29, of Neptune, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated following a traffic stop on Route 34 around 1:17 a.m., Sgt. Steven Wolter said. Thomas P. Tomori, 48, of Brick, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated  following a traffic stop on Route 35 around 2:56 a.m., Wolter said. Both men were cited and released with a court date, Wolter said.
