Anonymous donations pay off Kmart tabs for Christmas
Lisa Sullivan stood in line at the layaway counter at the Wall Township Kmart earlier this week, her two children in tow, hoping to pay off those Christmas presents. The holiday is less than a week away, and she was running out of time. She didn’t have to do this. Sullivan had plenty of presents already, all safely hidden from her kids’ sight in her Tinton Falls home and waiting to be wrapped for the big day. She wasn’t standing in that line for herself. Sullivan is what Kmart this year is calling a “Layaway Angel” – an anonymous person who pays off the remaining layaway amount on someone else’s account. It’s something she felt she had to do, a way to spread around some of her own good fortune to hopefully brighten someone’s Christmas day…

The next big day of the holiday shopping season kickoff comes today
Friday was black. Saturday was small and local. What’s next? The kickoff of the holiday shopping season continues today with Cyber Monday, when online shoppers turn to the Web en masse to seek out deals. If you plan to log on, you’re not alone. According to a study commissioned by Shop.org, the division of the National Retail Federation that coined the “Cyber Monday” term back in 2005, nearly 107 million Americans plan to shop online tomorrow. A CNN money report says sales are expected to be higher than ever this year, hitting $1.2 billion. It's not just the Web-based giants like Amazon that will be offering deals. When millions of Americans sit down to a hot Thanksgiving meal on Thursday, three local companies want to make sure that New Jersey's veterans are too. The non-profit G.I. Go Fund, along with Gore Financial LLC. of Oregon and ZBRELLA Inc. of New York City, want to say "thank you" to veterans in six New Jersey counties this year. The cards will be provided on a need basis to veterans in Essex, Bergen, Morris, Monmouth, Ocean and Hunterdon counties. What are your family's go-to holiday dishes?
Every family has a special Thanksgiving recipe – the one everybody looks forward to on the best eating holiday of the year. In my family, it's a pumpkin pie recipe that, according to legend, has been handed down through the generations from Robert E. Lee's household. Who knows if that's true – it involves a lot of lemon, which I doubt was readily available in mid-19th century Virginia, so I'm tempted to think it's been tweaked. But we wouldn't dare let a Thanksgiving go by without dragging out that stained recipe card and baking a few pies. Take a minute today to share the details on your own favorite dish with Patch! Whether it's your own take on cranberry sauce or the best stuffing around, or even tricks to making the best turkey, we …
