Earning An Earth-Friendly Reward

Allenwood students earn cash for recycling

Allenwood School students are reducing the amount of garbage the school generates while working toward a cash prize of $125,000 in an environmentally friendly contest that ends today. Since the beginning of the year, students at the K-5 elementary school have been participating in a program offered by a company named TerraCycle, which accepts select, everyday trash items such as potato chip bags or candy bar wrappers and turns them into consumer products, such as recycling containers or even backpacks, according to the group's website. TerraCycle pays a small amount for each item in their list of 33 items the group accepts, according to the website. TerraCycle makes 50 products from otherwise non-recyclable materials.
