Hurricane Sandy

PHOTOS: Demolition of Gee Gee's in Manasquan

Gee Gee's torn down, while Borough Beach Headquarters going up next door

Hurricane Sandy heavily damaged large portions of Manasquan's beachfront, and this week one of the most well-known businesses fell to the wrecking crew. Gee Gee's most damaged portion, its south side, was demolished this week. The northside is being prepared to reopen, selling pizza and other boardwalk food in time for the 2013 season. But the landmark business became a casualty to Hurricane Sandy and was torn into a pile of rubble this week. However, the signs of destruction that is Gee Gee's is being flanked by rebuilding to its north and south. While the building is renovating on the north side, the borough of Manasquan is rebuilding its beach headquarters directly to the south. The beach headquarters is quickly taking shape, with …

Manasquan: Beach Damaged, Downtown Fine

Borough struggles against tourist assumption

While Manasquan works hard to rebuild its beachfront, it's downtown remains virtually unscathed -- a message Borough Administrator Joe DeIorio says needs repeating. "We need to get the message out that we are open," he said. As the borough resurfaces its asphalt beach walkway, sifts beach sands and secures damaged beachfront, stores along such places as Broad Street are its own destination that reopened as the power went back on after Hurricane Sandy. But that area struggles against assumptions that the whole borough is closed from the storm, DeIorio said. "Tell everyone: that is not the case," he said. The perception problem needs to be overcome to bring tourism back to both the downtown and the beachfront, he said. The borough plans to …

Manasquan: Secure Your Hurricane-Devastated Home Or We'll Secure It For You

Seven houses near oceanfront remain exposed with heavy damage after Hurricane Sandy, and the borough contacted homeowners to secure the property

Manasquan's message to seven homeowners who've yet to secure their heavily damaged properties: act soon or have the borough secure it for you and send you a bill. Seven homes around the Manasquan oceanfront which saw walls and roofs collapse —their damaged interiors still flapping in the wind — have yet to secure the property since Hurricane Sandy. But the borough will require action from homeowners, on grounds these homes are so open and unsafe that they could cause someone harm. With the beachfront to open in less than a month and the tourist season behind it, there is concern that someone could wander near the heavily damaged and partially collapsed houses and be hurt, Borough Administrator Joe DeIorio said. While other properties have …
