Hurricane Sandy

PHOTOS: Demolition of Gee Gee's in Manasquan

Gee Gee's torn down, while Borough Beach Headquarters going up next door

Hurricane Sandy heavily damaged large portions of Manasquan's beachfront, and this week one of the most well-known businesses fell to the wrecking crew. Gee Gee's most damaged portion, its south side, was demolished this week. The northside is being prepared to reopen, selling pizza and other boardwalk food in time for the 2013 season. But the landmark business became a casualty to Hurricane Sandy and was torn into a pile of rubble this week. However, the signs of destruction that is Gee Gee's is being flanked by rebuilding to its north and south. While the building is renovating on the north side, the borough of Manasquan is rebuilding its beach headquarters directly to the south. The beach headquarters is quickly taking shape, with …

Yes, but that earthquake a couple years ago destroyed it. Only building on the east coast impacted. And don't forget the parking lot at Sea Watch is getting top priority for the high priced parking spots.   more ›

Manasquan: Beach Damaged, Downtown Fine

Borough struggles against tourist assumption

While Manasquan works hard to rebuild its beachfront, it's downtown remains virtually unscathed -- a message Borough Administrator Joe DeIorio says needs repeating. "We need to get the message out that we are open," he said. As the borough resurfaces its asphalt beach walkway, sifts beach sands and secures damaged beachfront, stores along such places as Broad Street are its own destination that reopened as the power went back on after Hurricane Sandy. But that area struggles against assumptions that the whole borough is closed from the storm, DeIorio said. "Tell everyone: that is not the case," he said. The perception problem needs to be overcome to bring tourism back to both the downtown and the beachfront, he said. The borough plans to …

When I look for a summer home/tourist destination, I don't care if the beach is wiped out, as long as I can spend money downtown miles from the beach.   more ›

Manasquan: Secure Your Hurricane-Devastated Home Or We'll Secure It For You

Seven houses near oceanfront remain exposed with heavy damage after Hurricane Sandy, and the borough contacted homeowners to secure the property

Manasquan's message to seven homeowners who've yet to secure their heavily damaged properties: act soon or have the borough secure it for you and send you a bill. Seven homes around the Manasquan oceanfront which saw walls and roofs collapse —their damaged interiors still flapping in the wind — have yet to secure the property since Hurricane Sandy. But the borough will require action from homeowners, on grounds these homes are so open and unsafe that they could cause someone harm. With the beachfront to open in less than a month and the tourist season behind it, there is concern that someone could wander near the heavily damaged and partially collapsed houses and be hurt, Borough Administrator Joe DeIorio said. While other properties have …

Manasquan Beaches, Boardwalk to Reopen for May 23

Special ribbon cutting and other fanfare planned

The beach season will begin May 23 for Manasquan, as borough officials plan a special ribbon-cutting and other fanfare to mark the beach and boardwalk reopening. Councilman Michael W. Mangan said the event is still being planned, but a ribbon-cutting will be held May 23, possibly around the Brielle Road intersection, to kick off the tourist season. Mangan said it's important to have an opening ceremony for the beach season each year but particularly this year after Hurricane Sandy. The borough and its tourism commission is also planning a party afterward at Leggett's Bar on First Avenue, with limited tickets available for $15. Mangan said more information on ticket sales would eventually be available on the borough website.

UPDATE: Christie Predicts FEMA Will Scale Back Flood Maps

Governor provides update on rebuilding, with focus on flood maps and Blue Acres buyout, and plenty of anecdotes

Gov. Chris Christie predicted the Federal Emergency Management Agency will scale back tough new flood maps it issued last December, according to news reports. Those maps place many more properties in flood zones, requiring many of them to be elevated if their owners don't want to see flood insurance rates soar, according to reports. The initial FEMA flood maps, which could create thousands more in insurance premiums and have residents raising their houses feet off the ground, are "too aggressive," said Gov. Christie at Thursday's town hall meeting. He was addressing a packed crowd of officials and residents in the Hurricane Sandy damaged town of Manasquan, and Christie returned to the complicated and controversial topic of what would …

@ clamdigger, prior to the release of the preliminary maps expected in August, municipalities that are NFIP participants will be provided with a work map to identify "obstructions" to wave activity within their boundaries. It is to the benefit of the municipalities and their residents to provide FEMA with "solid" information that can be included in the overland wave propagation component of the …   more ›
