The Lyrids may be seen during predawn hours on April 21 and 22.
The forecast for Monmouth County calls for partly cloudy skies, but the possibility of seeing the second major meteor shower of the year remains. The first major meteor shower since January, is currently visible, with peak hours coming during the predawn hours on Sunday, April 21 and Monday, April 22. The Lyrid meteor shower should be visible in one way or another from now through April 26, Accuweather’s Mark Paquette said this week. The forecast from the National Weather Service out of Mount Holly for predawn hours on both April 21 and 22 calls for partly cloudy skies, with sunnier skies taking over during the day. Space has saved the best light show for the last, it seems. The Geminid meteor shower 2012, the final major meteor shower each year and likely to be the best, peaks overnight Dec. 13 and Dec. 14, and skywatchers are promising a fabulous end-of-the-year show. Wall-based teacher and photographer Mike Black caught some images of the Perseid Meteor Shower, an annual celestial event that was visible over the weekend. "This is a great year for The Perseids, as the moon is not in sky until near dawn,'' Black said. "Also, anyone can see them, all you need are your eyes, and getting away from lights. You can see them, and other meteors, any night this week."
