While on a tour of New Jersey, Japan's ambassador stopped in Freehold and announced a donation to help rebuild New Jersey.
Images of the damage left from Hurricane Sandy decorated the conference room in the Hall of Records on Wednesday, as the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders sat down with Shigeyuki Hiroki, ambassador and consulate general of Japan in New York. After hearing of the damage suffered by New Jersey residents, Hiroki began visiting with counties to hear how they each fared during the storm. Monmouth County spokesperson William ‘Bill’ Heine’s absence in the Freeholders’ Meeting Room was palpable Thursday. During his five-year tenure, the 54-year-old Howell resident regularly sat in the audience with other county department heads during freeholder board meetings, fielding questions before and after such sessions from journalists, residents, and freeholders alike. Heine died from a heart attack on Sunday, Sept. 9. Longtime Howell resident and Monmouth County Director of Public Information Bill Heine died on Sunday. Heine, who worked as Monmouth County chief spokesman since 2005, overseeing the 10-member public information and tourism departments based in Freehold, died of a heart attack on Sunday morning, according to Freeholder Serena DiMaso. "He always had a camera around his neck and a smile on his face," said DiMaso. Freeholder director repeated call for resignations after former Brookdale Community College President Peter Burnham pleaded guilty to official misconduct charges.
Tuesday's guilty plea from former Brookdale Community College President Peter Burnham has some calling for more financial accountability from the college's board of trustees. Burnham, 68 of Colts Neck, pleaded guilty on Tuesday before Judge Thomas F. Scully to two counts of official misconduct and one count of theft by deception. Prosecutors say Burnham used credit cards issued to him by Brookdale to purchase more than $10,000 worth of items. According to News 12, Burnham made $216,000 in his position at Brookdale. Freeholder Director John Curley, who became the community college's liaison in January, 2011, said he was the one to call attention to personal spending with college money from Burnham's office. Tax levy in 2012 spending plan held at $302 million for third year
The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders approved a $4.9 million spending plan by a unanimous vote Thursday at Middletown Town Hall. The 2012 budget is $4,150,000 less than last year’s, bringing the county’s spending to 2009 levels. The budget includes a $302,475,000 tax levy for the third year. With a shrinking ratable base, the county tax rate increased 3.5 percent, from 25.16 for each $100 of property value in 2011 to 26.06 cents in 2012. The budget includes no layoffs, though the county will continue a hiring freeze for non-essential positions. In response to a decline in revenue, the county expanded shared service offerings, cut its allocation to Brookdale Community College by $6 million, requested cuts from department heads, …

Monmouth County Republicans will gather at Colts Neck High School Saturday to determine who will fill a vacated seat on the county Board of Chosen Freeholders. Howell Mayor Robert Walsh, Holmdel Mayor Serena DiMaso, Atlantic Highlands Councilman Peter Doyle and Manalapan Councilman Ryan Green all vie for the unexpired seat left vacant upon former board Director Robert Clifton’s election to the state Assembly. Howell Mayor Robert Walsh has been named as one of four candidates vying for a seat on the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders. According to the website of the Monmouth County Affiliated Republican Club, Walsh will be running against Holmdel Deputy Mayor Serena DiMaso, Atlantic Highlands Councilman Peter T. Doyle and Manalapan Township Committeeman Ryan Green in the Jan. 14 election. The seat has become available since Freeholder Director Robert D.
