Route 71 Bridge Work Complete

Reopened to traffic during overnight hours

Work is complete on the Route 71 bridge connecting downtown Belmar with Avon-By-The-Sea, officials said. The state Department of Transportation had closed the bridge during the overnight hours this week while crews worked to upgrade the bridge's safety barrier gates. But on Wednesday, Belmar Mayor Matt Doherty said he was informed the bridge was once again fully operational.  The closures, which began Monday, were necessary for a manufacturer’s warranty upgrade on the new safety barrier gates, according to a DOT release. which will be performed at no-cost to the state, the release says. In 2011, the DOT completed a project to rehabilitate the mechanical and electrical systems on the bridge and installed new safety barrier gates, the …

Letters to the Editor

Letter: Roadway Projects Need to Incorporate Cyclists, Pedestrians, Safety

NJDOT Commissioner explains "Complete Roads" initiatives

Letter as submitted by state Department of Transportation Commissioner James Simpson: When the word “transportation” is mentioned, New Jersey residents for the most part think of cars and trucks or trains and buses and their daily commute.  I have spent most of my adult life as a business owner, with locations in the Garden State.  That experience has given me the perspective of a motorist. After becoming Commissioner of Transportation, I relocated near Trenton to one of the most walkable towns in the state, where the freedom from relying on a car for shopping, dining, entertainment and the occasional train trip to the “Big Apple” is second to none. As a pedestrian, I’ve seen first hand drivers speeding down local streets showing a lack of…

There are things that have the aspects of the "common good." Infrastructures designed to minimize unsafe conditions and promote more civility on the roadways in the long run produce a more desirable and stable society. Yes user fees have their place in the economy. But to argue that all local parks, open spaces in cities, and other "public facilities" like libraries must be profit driven simply …   more ›

Warmer Weather Brings Out The Traffic Cones

Construction on Route 18 Bridges begins on Route 138

The state Department of Transportation says you’ll have to get used to seeing orange cones and lane closures on bridges over Route 18 as the agency embarks on multi-million dollar construction project. The DOT in a release on Monday said a $3.2 million construction project to mend the 38 bridges over the length of Route 18 in Monmouth and Middlesex counties begins with the Route 138 bridges.  Single lane closures will be allowed on Route 18 in each direction during overnight and off-peak hours and shoulder closures will be allowed at any time. No closures will be allowed during weekends in the summer. The project is expected to be complete by fall, the release says. “Maintaining our state’s transportation infrastructure in a state of good …
