The state is postponing Route 35 reconstruction until after Labor Day, a welcome relief to local officials and business people who feared that the work would cause massive traffic delays all summer. Boardwalk to be done by Memorial Day weekend
Shortly after Point Beach announced it had not received a dime of FEMA money, FEMA announced it's sending the oceanfront town $2.1 million to help pay for the rebuilding of its Sandy-ravaged boardwalk. Eight days after Point Beach officials at a council meeting bemoaned the lack of cash flowing from FEMA, FEMA made its announcement. On Wednesday afternoon, U.S. Senators Frank R. Lautenberg and Robert Menendez (both D-NJ) today announced that Point Pleasant Beach will receive more than $2.1 million to reimburse the town for the cost of repairing and rebuilding the boardwalk. Bridge between Point Beach and Brielle to remain passable
You'll be able to keep crossing the Route 35 bridge when you come to it. It's been passable since mid-afternoon Wednesday and it looks like it will stay that way. The state says the testing on the bridge is finished, which is good news for those who sat in traffic Wednesday as the bridge was intermittently in the raised position. Contractor crews left the bridge shortly after 3 p.m. Wednesday and will not need to return. Contractors for the state Department of Transportation (DOT) were testing the locking mechanisms on the bridge, they ran two or three tests and they were just fine, said DOT spokesman Timothy Greeley on Thursday. The Route 35 bridge, between Point Pleasant Beach and Brielle, is now passable again, but might be up again tomorrow. Contractors for the state Department of Transportation (DOT) have finished work for the day, but may need to do additional work Thursday, possibly even Friday, said Timothy Greeley, a DOT spokesperson. The council votes Tuesday night to undo the early bar closing ordinance passed in 2012
The Point Beach Council voted unanimously on Tuesday night to undo an early bar closing ordinance passed last year. The vote during the council meeting at Borough Hall was adoption of an ordinance to repeal an ordinance adopted last year to require all bars and restaurants in Point Beach to stop serving alcohol by midnight. Last year's ordinance rolling back the "last call" to midnight never went into effect because the state Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control issued a stay. Kim Guadagno who kicked off the state's "Show your Love for the Jersey Shore" campaign on Monday afternoon at Jenkinson's Aquarium on the boardwalk. Mabrey scores 35 in Beach win
Marina Mabrey scored 35 points as Point Pleasant Beach beat St. Rose 69-68 in a game that came down to the final second. Mabrey's teammate, Katelynn Flaherty scored 21 on Thursday night. St. Rose led through much of the first half on the strength of their 3-point shooting but PPB rallied to take a 35-33 lead at the break. Cindy Napolitano of St. Rose hit on six 3-point shots to score 18 points. Teammate Sarah Kurtz scored 19.

Barrella and Mayer have words over parking plan
Point Beach Council late Tuesday night unanimously tanked an ordinance mandating that bars stop serving alcohol at midnight, but there was a lot of acrimony over talk of a new parking plan. The council, as anticipated, voted on first reading to repeal an ordinance for bars to stop serving alcohol at midnight, a measure that was blocked temporarily by the state Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control last summer. The ordinance to keep closings at 2 a.m. is scheduled for public hearing and adoption at the Feb. 19 meeting.
