But state will work on drainage, pump stations during summer
The state is postponing Route 35 reconstruction until after Labor Day, a welcome relief to local officials and business people who feared that the work would cause massive traffic delays all summer. "I'm very happy," said Bay Head Mayor Bill Curtis. "This is more than enough of a change, even if they start the day after Labor Day." He and other Bay Head officials and business owners had also been concerned the state Department of Transportation (DOT) road work would kill parking spaces on Route 35, just as businesses are hoping a robust summer tourism season can help them recover from Superstorm Sandy. Point Pleasant Beach Mayor Vincent Barrella had more of a mixed reaction. "I'm pleased, but disappointed they didn't let me know," said …

Krissy Suckow finished Boston Marathon about 20 minutes before bomb went off
Krissy Suckow, who ran in the Boston Marathon on Monday, had time on the drive home to the Jersey Shore to think about how someone planned the bombing that left three dead, including an 8-year-old child, and at least 141 wounded. And she just kept thinking about the 5K race that was run the day before. "They had a 5K race the day before set up on the marathon course," Suckow said, as she rode in her father's car as he drove them home to Wall on Monday evening. "The finish line and everything were all set up for the marathon the next day, so anyone could see the whole course the day before and plan exactly where they wanted to do this," said Suckow, 29, a seventh and eighth grade teacher at Rahway Academy in Union County. And plan they …

UPDATE: Memorial Middle School dance postponed until Feb. 22
Point Boro is recommending that residents in flood-prone areas seek safer ground until the approaching storm passes and the risk of flooding subsides. "With a coastal flood warning having been issued for Monmouth, Ocean and Middlesex Counties tonight into tomorrow, the Borough encourages all residents who were affected by Hurricane Sandy to stay alert to changing conditions," the Borough announces on its Facebook page. The National Weather Service (NWS) forecast, which was updated just before 11 a.m., but is subject to change, now predicts for today: "Threat of heavy snowfall continues. Winter storm warnings and wind advisories in effect for coastal areas. Coastal flooding threat continues. Coastal flood warnings in effect for the high …

Span will be closed overnight Dec. 19, 26 and Jan. 2
The Route 88 bridge in Point Borough will be closed from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Dec. 19 and 26 and Jan. 2. Like the closure this past Monday and Thursday nights, the upcoming closures are due to the Army Corps of Engineers repairing the corroded steel of the bulkhead along the canal, said Steve Rochette, an Army Corps spokesperson. The repairs are part of work that has been ongoing for months and has nothing to do with superstorm Sandy, Rochette said.

Utility cautions that using generators can be dangerous
JCP&L is getting ready for Hurricane Sandy, with extra staff on standby and a lot of lessons learned. JCP&L clearly has not forgotten the criticism it took after Tropical Storm Irene ravaged New Jersey in August 2011. Utility officials learned from it, made a wide array of improvements in technology, communications and planning and they're ready to put that to the test, said JCP&L spokesman Ron Morano. "We've made improvements to how we provide customer information," Morano said, adding the company is doing all it can to prepare for Sandy and to plan on how to keep officials and residents informed and well-served. For starters, JCP&L is doing what everyone else is doing: closely watching weather forecasts, trying to figure out when and …

He was charged with disorderly conduct and swimming in the canal
A Wall man who jumped off the Route 88 bridge has been charged with swimming in the canal and disorderly conduct, police said Monday. Devon R. Kuehnen, 34, of the Allenwood section of Wall, suffered only a minor laceration to his nose after jumping from the bridge late Friday night and setting off a massive manhunt that lasted more than two hours, police said. Police, divers, first aid and fire department volunteers searched the canal and surrounding areas before finding Kuehnen safe on a canal bank early Saturday morning, police said. He was charged and released on a summons. Swimming in the canal is prohibited by borough ordinance. A bridge tender called the police at 11:48 p.m. Friday, saying a man had jumped from the bridge, prompting …

Mom does not know where she is; police searching
A 15-year-old Point Borough girl who ran away Sunday has been intermittently texting family and friends, saying she's OK, but not saying where she is, said the girl's mother. Allison Chirichello, who is about 5'3", and who will be a junior at Point Borough High School in September, has been texting occassionally using her sister's Blackberry phone, having left her own cell at home, said Colleen Molok, her mother, on Tuesday night. However, Molok said she does not know where her daughter is and efforts to trace her through the cell phone have been unsuccessful, possibly because it seems Allison often has the cell turned off. "She texted us Sunday and said, 'I'm OK, I'll be home tomorrow,' " Molok said. But she still hasn't come home. Point …
