Assemblyman Sean Kean wants state's second largest utility to begin raising or moving lowlying substations
Assemblyman Sean Kean is repeating a call for Jersey Central Power & Light to present a plan to raise power substations prone to flooding during major storms. Kean, R-Monmouth and Ocean, in a release last week said that the utility company in December said it would present a plan to raise power substations that flooded or nearly flooded during Hurricane Sandy. In the release Kean specifically mentioned the Glendola substation in Wall, where he is also the municipal attorney, and substations in Sea Girt and Manasquan. Encroaching water threatened the latter two stations in the November storms, while the Glendola station was inundated. Substations convert electrical power from high voltage to low — or low to high voltage — and distribute it …
State agencies, legislators, local officials attend special hearing in Wall
Municipalities throughout the region are looking for answers about how to deal with the lasting impact of superstorm Sandy. State Sen. Robert Singer and Assemblyman Sean Kean (both R-30) provided an opportunity Thursday night for residents to hear directly from relevant agencies at a special hearing attended by local officials at the Wall Municipal Complex. Representatives from FEMA, the Department of Banking and Insurance, the Small Business Administration and others answered questions on topics ranging from how shore towns can rebuild their boardwalks to how more inland towns can afford to clear tons of trees and debris from their roadways. "We really had a concentrated few towns that were impacted to the level where they need to avail …

Assemblyman wants to sign on to two bills that would eliminate the program or at least significantly alter it
Assemblyman Sean Kean wants to kill the Red Light Camera Program and has requested to sign on to a bill that would do just that, along with another that would significantly alter the program that has installed cameras at some traffic lights throughout the state designed to nab red-light runners. Kean, R-Monmouth, said in a release that he intends to sign on to Assembly Bill 3285, which would increase the timing of yellow lights by a full second at intersections that have a red light camera system, lower the current fine for making an illegal right turn on a red light from $85 to $20 and allow a ½-second grace period once a light has turned from amber to red, according to a release. The bill, sponsored by fellow Republican Declan O’Scanlon…

One major point that has been missed by many is that the incentives are all wrong. This should be about safety and not revenue. AAA and other auto driving supporter group studies have shown that the safety factor is greatly increased merely by timing a longer yellow light and even by over-lapping the reds at certain intersections. The monetary incentive is to do the exact opposite. It also should…   more ›
