Monmouth Bridges Opening to Marine Traffic

Advance notice needed to schedule openings for brief intervals at Shark River, Oceanic, Sea Bright-Rumson and Glimmer Glass bridges

Marine traffic will be able to exit Monmouth County waterways during brief intervals starting Friday. Update: Shark River Bridge Reopened to Traffic

Repairs closed the bridge temporarily on Thursday

Update, 3:45 p.m.: The Shark River Bridge has been reopened to all traffic. Update, 12 p.m.: The Shark River Bridge is currently open to marine traffic after county crews diagnosed a problem that kept the bridge nonoperational for hours this morning. “We have determined the cause of the problem and are working to get the bridge back into regular operation,” John W. Tobia, director of Monmouth County Public Works and Engineering, said. “We anticipate that the bridge will reopen to vehicle and pedestrian traffic by the end of the day.” The problem lies in the bridge's locking mechanism, according to a release from Monmouth County. I think I want a contract to repair bridges. This bridge was "fixed" less than a year ago, and now it doesn't work. Then, in turn, the county lacks the money to stripe bikelanes, but not the money to repair allegedly repaired bridges.   more ›

Route 71 Bridge Overnight Closings Start Monday

Upgrades will close DOT bridge from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. through May 5

The Route 71 bridge connecting downtown Belmar with Avon-By-The-Sea will be closed during the overnight hours next week while crews work to upgrade the bridge's safety barrier gates, officials said.  The state Department of Transportation, beginning Monday, April 30, will pin the bridge in the open position from 9 p.m. until 6 a.m., repeating the process each night that week, according to a release from the state Department of Transportation.  The project is expected to be completed by Saturday, May 5, at 6 a.m., the release says.  During the overnight hours, traffic will be redirected to the Route 35 bridge just one west of the Route 71 bridge, the release says. State To Pay To Repair Belmar Boulevard Bridge

County awarded $1 million Local Aid grant

The state has given Monmouth County $1 million to repair the bridge over a small inlet of the Shark River, according to a Department of Transportation release. The small span , called County Bridge W-33, is located on Belmar Boulevard just west of Route 35 and it is one of close to 300 bridges that have made the state's repair list, according to the release. The DOT released $29 million to fix 31 New Jersey county-owned bridges across the state, under the state's Local Aid program, the release says. “This program has already enabled counties to remove 53 bridges from a list of nearly 290 bridges that were rated deficient, obsolete or otherwise in need of repair,” DOT Commissioner James Simpson said in the release. “These new grants will …
