Bill Skuby calls furor over store display 'best marketing campaign I've ever had'
The Skuby & Co. clothing store in Spring Lake Wednesday morning was humming. Bill Skuby, the store's owner who made regional fame Tuesday for a controversial window display featuring President Barack Obama portrayed as a witch doctor, was answering the phone, which rang every minute or two, with a warning to callers that he'd be happy to talk so long as they were friendly. Skuby said he opened shop that morning with dozens of messages — some supportive, others somewhat profane — on the store's answering machine because of a politically-charged Halloween display some have accused of being racist. Skuby, a self-described Independent, denies being a racist. “I don’t even see color," Skuby said. Skuby said that he dislikes Obama's …

Authorities say practical joke behind morning investigation at Skuby & Co. in Spring Lake
Police on Wednesday quelled rumors of a purported bomb threat against a Spring Lake clothing store owner who has come under fire for a window display featuring President Barack Obama as a witch doctor. Early Wednesday morning police investigated Skuby & Co. clothing store on Third Avenue and determined a phone call made to the store's owner, Bill Skuby, was nothing more than a practical joke from one of his friends, Spring Lake Police Chief Edward Kerr said. Skuby said he's been fielding death threats and unfairly labeled a racist after a media firestorm erupted Tuesday morning surrounding his anti-Obama window display, which, he says, is nothing more than a political Halloween decoration. Police and the Spring Lake Fire Department …

Lines at grocery stores and gas stations grow as storm nears Jersey Shore
This evening in the area, locals are stocking up on last minute hurricane supplies and staying fairly calm about the storm that's scheduled to hit the area tomorrow, but it has not been that way all day. Janet Torsiello, closing manager of Super Foodtown on Route 35 in Wall said the morning crowd was a lot different than this evenings. "From the minute the doors opened there was a line of people waiting to get in," said Torsiello. "We've been selling out of water, batteries and bread. We've been pretty stocked up on everything else." This evening, the lines are much shorter than they were earlier and locals are picking up a few last items including goodies for their hurricane parties, hoping they don’t have to leave the area. "I've lived …

Council moves toward sending Green Acres diversion application to state Department of Environmental Protection.
Borough officials have sunk the idea of floating a referendum this November on the proposed move of the WRAT-FM tower from Main Street to Behrmann Park. Although Mayor Michael Ryan says he and the borough council have heard plenty from residents opposed to the proposal to raise a new, 533-foot-high radio communications tower in the Green Acres-protected park near Margerum and 22nd avenues, they have heard from just as many residents favoring that plan. Those who would like to see the existing 300-foot-high tower removed from the borough’s downtown are frustrated that it remains in place despite six years of discussion about dismantling it, Ryan said during Tuesday night’s council meeting. “For every letter that comes in saying ‘Don’t move …
