Saturday's St. Patrick's Day parade in Seaside Heights was more than just a celebration of the holiday.
A lonely kind of place. That's how Ginnie Kenney described Seaside Heights in the months following Hurricane Sandy. She said she and her neighbors were expecting visitors to hopefully return to the resort town in June, but she was more optimistic. With the borough working hard at restoration following the storm's devastation, Kenney said she believed St. Patrick's Day was a more likely possibility. On Saturday, tens of thousands of visitors lined the green-stripped Boulevard in Seaside Heights for the borough's annual St. Patrick's Day parade, the first time its welcomed the public back in full since the storm. Though the boardwalk is just pilings, the former boards being washed away, and though many homes and businesses are still …

The borough held its first major public event since Hurricane Sandy.
Thousands of people crowded the borough's streets, angling through the mass for a position with a decent view. Revelers hung out on motel balconies or behind metal barricades, cheering with the arrival of every beverage. For blocks surrounding the boulevard, drivers circled around, struggling to find a place to park. Welcome back, Seaside. On Saturday, Seaside Heights hosted its annual St. Patrick's Day parade, welcoming tens of thousands of visitors to enjoy the family-friendly event and witness the shore's ongoing reconstruction efforts. With the boardwalk still being installed after being destroyed and many homes and businesses still gutted from Hurricane Sandy, crowds marched down the green-striped Boulevard, resuming an annual …

Four decades of Irish culture, local community and celebration continues Sunday
There's another reason to toast this weekend: the Belmar-Lake Como St. Patrick's Day Parade turns 40. We put together a collection of videos from the Manasquan-Belmar Patch archives and from YouTube showing many a previous year in parades. And while some things never change (lots of green, and pipes and drums) the parade has grown to include new groups and attract more visitors over its history. Check out our video gallery and share your own photo or video memories from past parades.

Main street closed for parade route
Seeing few north-south corridors for the major influx of traffic for St. Patrick's Day, Belmar will open the hurricane-battered and under-construction Ocean Avenue for parade day. Currently construction crews are finishig piling work and advancing the boardwalk undersides and decking, and Ocean Avenue remains closed daily to accommodate Epic Construction's equipment and workers. Before then, the road was closed west of Ocean Avenue to both deter onlookers and cordon off one of the most damaged sections of Belmar after Hurricane Sandy. But for March 3, the day of the massive St. Patrick's Day Parade, Belmar will allow traffic along Ocean Avenue. With the day normally seeing a tremendous amount of traffic, keeping Ocean Avenue closed would …

War veterans and many others walk and show their pride
Thousands represented their towns, their pride and their Irish heritage at the 38th Annual Belmar-Lake Como St. Patrick's Day Parade along Main Street on Sunday. A long line of war veterans and other organizations proudly marched down Main Street on a sunny but slightly chilly day, including the Belmar and West Orange chapters of the Friendly Sons of The Shillelagh. Many used scarves and blankets to keep warm at the annual parade. But the chilly weather did not stop thousands of people from celebrating. Many Irish enthusiasts dressed in St. Patrick’s Day hats, necklaces, scarves and more. For those who got to Belmar past noon, it was difficult getting a spot to see the street. Many sat along the curb with blankets draped over them to …
