State Police Updating Local Crime Data Weekly

Weekly town-by-town crime data made available online

Updated crime statistics for towns and counties in New Jersey will be made available more frequently than in the past, according to the State Police. Police will be updating an online database of crime stats weekly, or as often as local departments report their new information. In the past, statewide statistics on crime were updated only once per year in the annual Uniform Crime Report. Data for 2011 was released in December. “For the first time, we are able to give the public a sense of the current crime picture in their area. Even as preliminary data, this will be a great new tool for the public,” Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police Colonel Rick Fuentes said in a statement. The new data is available online here. How Does Crime in Wall Compare to Neighboring Towns?

NJ Spotlight has created an interactive map of 2011 crime rates in New Jersey

Wall residents can easily compare how their municipality's crime rate in 2011 compared to neighboring towns with an interactive map created by NJ Spotlight. The map plots the total crime rate per 1,000 people for seven index crimes (violent crimes include murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault, and non-violent crimes are burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft) using data from the recently released 2011 Uniform Crime Report. Wall's crime rate per 1,000 residents was 18.2, well below Monmouth's 23.7 and the state's 24.7. Neptune and Asbury Park had the highest crime rates per 1,000 residents in 2011 among nearby municipalities, with 72.1 victims per 1,000 residents in Neptune and 95.6 in Asbury Park. Nonviolent Crime Rose in Wall Twp. in 2011

Overall crime rate inches upward while county experiences a slight drop

The increase was owed entirely to a jump in the number of nonviolent crimes recorded in the township, bucking statistics found in greater Monmouth County, where crime was on the wane from 2010 to 2011. However, Wall's experience is in keeping with what the state saw overall, as there was a 3 percent increase in overall crime in New Jersey from 2010 to 2011, with increases in murder, robbery and rape.  Wall recorded 475 total incidents in 2011, up from 410 in 2010. However, the vast majority of crimes recorded were nonviolent — categorized as burglaries, larcenies, motor vehicle thefts and arson — with 459 …
