Township Committee is to talk municipal budget at upcoming session
The Township Committee is scheduled to hold a special executive meeting tonight at town hall, 2700 Allaire Rd. The meeting is a single-topic session, part of Mayor Todd Luttman’s reorganization of the panel’s work sessions. Upon becoming mayor, Luttman re-arranged the agendas for the committee’s workshop sessions. Instead of waiting until the end of the meeting for each of the members to give their reports, Luttman has tied he committee reports to each section of the agenda, a process that he believes will make the running of the meetings smoother. As part of that process, Luttman also has designated one work session a month to a single topic. This week’s topic will be the municipal budget, he said. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7 p…

Proposed zoning map change would still exclude big box home improvement warehouses
The Planning Board will begin mulling a major change to the zoning map that could affect the majority of Wall’s Route 35 corridor. The Township Committee at Wednesday’s regular meeting introduced an ordinance that proposes to allow “Home Center” uses into zones that currently exclude them. The ordinance was introduced by unanimous vote and was immediately remanded to the Planning Board for study by that panel. In zoning map changes, the advice of the Planning Board is sought prior to approval. The advice of the Planning Board is not, however, binding. The panel has 35 days to make its recommendations. If adopted, the ordinance would change the zoning designations of two Highway Business Zones – HB-80 and HB-200 – by allowing “Home Center…

Hourlong meeting Wednesday introduced several pieces of local legislation
The Township Committee on Wednesday forwarded several pieces of local legislation at the first business meeting of new Mayor Todd Luttman’s single-year term. Each measure was introduced by a unanimous vote of the all-Republican committee and each was scheduled for a public hearing on Feb. 27. The first was an ordinance that would give the Committee the power to boot members of any board or committee who has had too may unexcused absences, according to the ordinance. The measure requires that volunteer members of municipal panels – such as the Planning Board, Recreation, or Shade Tree committees – must attend 65 percent of the scheduled meetings in any calendar year or face expulsion by a two-thirds majority vote by that panel, the …

Volunteer boards, committees could be affected by measure under consideration
The Township is mulling an attendance policy for members of the town’s volunteer boards and committees. The governing body is looking at developing a resolution that would set minimum standards of participation for volunteer board members. At its workshop meeting on Wednesday, the committee examined sample resolutions from Sayerville Borough and from the League of Municipalities. The identical resolutions required members who without cause misses four consecutive meetings or eight consecutive weeks, whichever was longer, could then be replaced. Currently, there is no attendance policy in place and members of the governing body said some committees and boards in the past have been unable to meet for want of a quorum. “This is good common …

Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, the Township Committee this week has moved its regular business meeting to Tuesday. The committee normally meets on Wednesday, but the shortened week prompted the governing body to bump up their regular session by one day. The committee’s meeting is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. at town hall, 2700 Allaire Rd. Also that night, the Board of Education is set to meet for its regular public session. Township Committee calling out JCP&L, demanding better emergency response
In a strongly-worded open letter, Mayor Jeffrey Foster and the Township Committee condemned the response of Jersey Central Power & Light to the recent storms and called on state authorities to force the utility company to implement emergency strategies for future disasters. The letter pulls no punches, calling JCP&L’s response to Hurricane Sandy and the Nor’easter that followed “atrocious,’’saying that the company’s lack of communication was “appalling,’’ and that their response to the disaster was “disjointed, disorganized and confused.’’ The committee drew a clear line between the management of JCP&L and its line workers, who the letter makes clear are not to blame for the company’s failings. The township committee in the letter said …
Township Committee sends open letter of thanks to workers, volunteers, residents
The Wall Township Committee is incredibly proud of the Wall Township employees and the work they have done in the response to Hurricane Sandy. We feel blessed to have such a great team of people to serve and support the residents of Wall and we want to thank each and every person who did their job so admirably in response to probably the worst storm to ever hit our town. Our Department of Public Works personnel worked tirelessly to manage the cleanup and keep normal operations in place for our residents even in light of a second storm that brought snow with it. Our Office of Emergency Management within the police department organized our township response and kept the residents continuously informed on our behalf. Our police department did…

Shouting match at last meeting of the governing body
An ongoing antagonism among some public speakers and Township Committee members boiled over at Wednesday’s regular meeting of the governing body. Comments, questions and criticisms from frequent Township Committee critics Nicholas Purpura, of Rue de la Port, and Betsy Cross, of New Bedford Road, turned into heated arguments among members of the committee and the administration Wednesday. Cross and Mayor Jeffrey Foster began shouting at each other after Cross peppered the committee with questions about a township-owned property on Holly Boulevard. At the end of the five minutes allotted to each public speaker, Cross continued to question the committee. After a few more minutes passed, Foster thanked Cross for her comments to end the …
