Filling A Vacancy 101: Board of Education

What's next for the BOE now that a member has resigned?

Now that John Tavis has resigned, what does the Board of Education do now? According to state law, the board will have 60 days from the date of the resignation to fill the vacancy, normally by a majority vote of the board. If the board fails to do so, the vacancy could be filled by the county superintendent, the law reads.  The Wall Township Board of Education bylaws say that the board will publicly notice for the vacancy and solicit candidates willing to fill it. The board will then interview candidates for the vacancy. This may or may not be done in public session. The vote to appoint a candidate, however, will be in public session, the bylaws read. Whoever is appointed to the seat will serve until the board’s next organization meeting, …

Wall School Board Adopts $68M Budget

Unanimous vote to adopt budget under cap with significant tech purchases, hiring

The Board of Education on Tuesday unanimously approved the budget for the upcoming school year following a presentation by administrators and a public hearing at a special meeting held at the Intermediate School.  The vote to adopt the budget was 8-0. Board member Donald Herbert, who was present prior to the start of the meeting, left the building before the board was called to order. He did not return. No explanation was given for his absence. The vote followed about an hour-long presentation by district administrators that varied little from the presentation given on Monday. Some budget numbers were changed slightly from Monday’s presentation, but  those changes were largely insignificant. The $68,462,470 total budget comes with just shy…

WE Lang, you are obviously completely unfamiliar with all of the obstacles to properly funding our schools over the last ten years. We would need a significant increase in budget just to get aligned with similar districts. And yet this Board is finding a way to stay well below the 2% cap. You don't have to thank them (though it wouldn't hurt), but try to refrain from uninformed blanket statements.   more ›

School Board Elections Move To November

No public vote on district budget, unless it exceeds 2 percent tax levy increase

The Board of Education in a special meeting Tuesday voted unanimously to move its annual elections to November. The school board called the extra session to beat a deadline of Feb. 17 imposed by the state Department of Education to decide whether to move the elections to November, when statewide elections are held.  In a Jan. 25 letter from Christopher D. Cerf, acting commissioner of the state Department of Education, districts were asked to let their county clerks know by the middle of February whether they were going to hold annual elections in November or keep them in April. No member of the public spoke at the lightly attended, 10-minute meeting. The vote was 9-0. “It does not mean that it hasn’t been considered for almost two years …

UPDATE: School Board Set To Meet

First public meeting since start of interim schools chief search

The Board of Education is scheduled to meet Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the Intermediate School, 2801 Allaire Ave. It is the first public meeting since the school board began interviewing candiates to fill in for Superintendent James Habel, who is out on medical leave and is not expected to return before his contract expires in June. The board last month began a search for a temporary chief and held interviews with candidates earlier this month. Schools Admin: Rosetta Stone Contract Will Be Signed

World Language instruction for elementary schools will be computer-based

School district officials at a meeting Thursday said the district’s decision to implement a computer-based language program in the elementary schools for the upcoming school year will not be altered. About 30 people attended the meeting, which was part sales pitch and part frank discussion. It followed Tuesday’s Board of Education presentation by outgoing Curriculum Director Marianne Gaffney, where a parade of parents criticized the plan to implement the Rosetta Stone computer-based language program to teach World Language to grades 1-5. Gaffney, who is leaving the district to take a position in the Cherry Hill school district, began the meeting giving basically the same presentation she did Tuesday, with minor changes. She was followed by…

I am a Wall tax payer. It is my understanding that this issue on Rosetta Stone was decided 1 year ago.Ms. Gaffney never indicated that to the concerned citizens at that time. There was no transparency I understand that the district is is saving $ in the implementation of Rosetta Stone . What I have issue with is the LACK OF TRANSPARENCY to the parents and taxpayers on this issue, and without the …   more ›

District Mulls Where To Spend State Aid Bump

Surprise windfall from Trenton bumps aid figures

Wall Township school received an unexpected windfall from Trenton this week when its state aid money was doubled as part of a state-wide increase to school districts. Wall schools’ share of the $600 million bump to school budgets doubles the aid the district had already banked for the 2011-2012 school year. The district will receive an additional $600,516 in state aid on top of the $600,516 bump it received in February, bringing Wall’s total state aid figure to $3,178,023. That’s $1,201,032 more in aid than last year, according to figures released by Gov. Chris Christie’s office this week. “I think it’s great that our aid has been increased,’’ said Brian Smyth, district business administrator. “There are plenty of areas to allocate these …
