West Belmar School Evacuated After Fire Alarm

All accounted for and no danger, officials say

West Belmar Elementary school students were evacuated for a short time Wednesday when a part of its heating system overloaded and failed, causing steam to trigger the fire alarm, officials said. No students or staff were injured in the scare. The building was cleared for a short time while fire officials evaluated the building for safe occupancy. Students were returned to classrooms shortly thereafter, schools Superintendent Daniel Simon said. Simon said a portion of the heating boiler in the school burst, causing steam, which then triggered the fire alarm.

Kids Play Camp Kicks Off With A Bang

Summer program offered through Wall Recreation began Monday

It all seemed to be quite normal at first. A line queued to register kids for the first day of Kids Play Camp, a 1/2-day summer program offered through the Wall Township Recreation Department, inside West Belmar School Monday morning. Inside the gym, dozens of kids were divided up into grade-specific groups, ranging from kindergarten to eighth, their voices mixing and bouncing off the walls in a cacophonic din of equal parts anticipation and excitement. Co-directors Hillary Addonizio and Michael Manson were shepherding children and their parents, keeping an order to the first-day chaos. Then, boom! Lightning from a fast-moving, but violent, storm passing through, followed immediately by a blast of thunder. The gym went dark. The kids …

Tree Planting At West Belmar School To Mark Arbor Day

County Freeholders to plant a Swamp White Oak on school grounds

The Monmouth County Freeholder Board will mark Arbor Day with a tree planting at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at West Belmar Elementary School, according to a release. Freeholders will plant a swamp white oak tree. Each student also will receive a tube seedling to plant in his or her own yard, the release says. Trees of swamp white oak provide cover for birds and mammals. The acorns are sweet and are an important food for wildlife such as squirrels, mice, white-tailed deer and a variety of birds. The crown shape and bi-colored leaves are attractive features. The leaves turn yellow in the fall, with an occasional red-purple, the release says.            “Swamp white oaks are typically planted on highway rights-of-way and are frequently used as …

The average school tax bill will increase $156 over last year’s bill, according to budget figures provided by the school district. The Wall Township school board on Thursday released additional figures supporting its $60 million 2011-12 tentative budget that were unavailable when the Board of Education voted to introduce the spending plan Tuesday. Fate Of West Belmar School to be Discussed Tonight

Feasibility study to be presented at Board of Education meeting

The possible fate of West Belmar School is scheduled to be discussed at the Board of Education's regular meeting tonight. Middletown-based T&M Associates will present the results of its study looking at the closure of West Belmar School to the board, which is scheduled to meet at 8 p.m. at the Intermediate School, 2801 Allaire Road.  The presentation closes a month-long study of whether the district could feasibly shutter West Belmar School  — the district's oldest and least populated elementary school — and disburse pupils to each of the three remaining elementary schools. District officials have said that the closure could save the district $1 million annually, providing a hedge against failed budgets or a loss in state aid. The prospect…
