Dog Abuse Suspects Arraigned in Packed Brick Courtroom

Charge: Brick couple abused 'Sammy' the cocker spaniel; one suspect receives public defender in case

The Brick couple accused of animal cruelty after claiming they found a dog in a garbage bag by the side of the road in March will face a maximum of six months in jail if convicted, a judge said Monday afternoon. Keith E. Morgan and Shauna Ewing Morgan of Sawmill Road were arraigned Monday afternoon by Judge Robert M. LePore in Brick Township Municipal Court, accused of animal cruelty, falsifying a police report and more in connection with abandoning their cocker spaniel, now known as Sammy, whose story had drawn followers across the country. “These are disorderly persons offenses,” LePore said, adding New Jersey law allows a maximum of a six-month jail sentence for charges arising from the same event. That news did not sit well with the …

Animal Abuse Suspects' Court Date Delayed

Keith and Shauna Morgan will now appear in May; 'Sammy' the dog continues to improve

The Brick couple accused of abusing a Cocker Spaniel, then claiming they found it on the side of the road before handing it over to a shelter, will not appear in court Wednesday as originally scheduled. A Brick Township municipal court official said court appearances for Keith and Shauna Morgan had been "relisted" for a date in May. Township officials later said the court date had been moved to May 6 at 4 p.m. No reason was given for why the case had been relisted. A call to Chief Victor "Buddy" Amato of the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals – the agency investigating the case – was not returned. In a social media post, Red Bank Veterinary Hospital said Sammy – the Morgans' former dog which is being treated …

Defy Convention

12:48 pm on Wednesday, May 8, 2013

NJ animal abuse laws are a joke, so there WILL be no real justice for that dog. Hopefully the public will dose out enough disgust and shame on these cretins that they will suffer as much, and as long, as the pup did. They should also be banned from owning another animal, ever, but I'm betting they'll try to get another one that has that "new dog smell".   more ›

Second Dog Removed from Abuse Suspects' Home

3-year-old Cocker Spaniel named Aby appeared to be in 'decent shape'

Authorities have removed a second dog from the home of a Brick couple suspected of abusing a 13-year-old Cocker Spaniel, then claiming they found it on the side of the road. The dog removed Thursday afternoon was a 3-year-old Cocker Spaniel named Aby, said Victor "Buddy" Amato, Chief Humane Law Enforcement Officer for the Monmouth County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The dog was voluntarily handed over to officers by Keith E. Morgan, 56, and Shauna Ewing Morgan, 43, of Sawmill Road, who have been charged with abusing another dog named Samurai. "We were getting anonymous tips for the last few days that there might be a second animal in the house," said Amato. "The anonymous tips were describing a mobile cocker spaniel, …

Hurricane Sandy

Devastation, Horror in Brick As Rescues Continue Through Tuesday

Officials still rescuing people from their homes; photo gallery of storm included

A family hoisted up in the bucket of a front loader gave a quick wave to neighbors after they were whisked from their home on Port Road. A few blocks away, two men in a kayak – with a small puppy in tow – had just escaped flood waters the old fashioned way: paddling out. Those types of stories played out over and over again Tuesday in Brick, where flooding barely receded after a wall of water came onshore in the hours following the landfall of Hurricane Sandy Monday night. Joel Matos was inspecting neighbors’ homes near Port Road – the same street  off Cherry Quay Road where two houses burnt down – and said he had never seen flooding like this before. “Last night, everyone was moving their cars to the ball field,” he said. “Some people …

Bed Bugs Force Brick Town Hall to Close 'Indefinitely'

Extermination set for this afternoon

Don't let the bed bugs bite. The small critters forced the closure of the Brick municipal building Thursday. Township officials say the building will be closed indefinitely due to an "infestation" of the nocturnal parasites. Pest control efforts will start Thursday afternoon, officials said. "The safety and well-being of the citizens that visit our building and our employees is our paramount concern," said Mayor Stephen C. Acropolis, in an e-mail Thursday morning about the closure. "The best course of action is to limit exposure while we work to exterminate the bed bugs." The building's closing comes at an inopportune time, since third quarter tax bills came due this week. Property taxes will not be collected while the building is closed, …

Minivan, Skateboarder Collide at Route 70 Intersection

Teen crossed lanes against "Do Not Walk" sign, police say

A 16-year-old Brick Township resident on a skateboard was struck by a minivan while crossing a busy intersection Friday night just after 10 p.m., police said. Traffic was detoured on Route 70 near the intersection with Route 88 for about two hours after the accident, in which a 2005 Toyota Sienna minivan being driven by Michael E. Dejuana Jr., 21, of Brick, struck a 16-year-old juvenile who was riding a skateboard, said Brick Police Officer Scott Dierking. The teen, whose identity was not released, was riding across the eastbound lanes of Route 70 against a "do not walk" signal and had crossed three lanes before being hit by Dejuana, who had a green light at the time, Dierking said. The teen was thrown to the center median; the minivan …

Accused Visitation Priest Out on Bail

Fr. Marukudiyil C. Velan will not be allowed to return to Mantoloking Road church, however

The Brick Township priest arrested last weekend for two sex offenses is now out on bail. Fr. Marukudiyil C. Velan, 64, had been in jail since last Saturday following his arrest on two counts of criminal sexual contact and a single count of endangering the welfare of a child. His bail had been set at $75,000 cash but later changed to $100,000 with a 10 percent bond option. He was bailed out Thursday. "The Diocese was informed that bail was posted for Father Christudas but we are not aware of who posted it," said Rayanne Bennett, spokeswoman for the Diocese of Trenton, referring to Velan's full name according to the diocese, Velanmarukudiyil J. Christudas. Because the allegation against Velan involved a minor, Bennett said, he will not be …

Toms River Woman, 56, Killed in Parkway Crash

Awaiting details on morning accident

A Toms River woman, the sole occupant of a blue Hyundai Santa Fe that went off the roadway of the northbound Garden State Parkway Tuesday morning, died from her injuries, state police said. Claire Baier, 56, was declared deceased at the scene, police said. There were some witnesses to the accident, who told police the vehicle "slowly drifted off the roadway," said State Police Sgt. Stephen Jones. The vehicle hit a guard rail before it flipped over into a wooded area, Jones said. Residual traffic delays from the 8:30 a.m. accident lasted through into the afternoon.

Your so-called "free-stretch" of the Parkway is south of the Toms River tolls and continues for a few miles (and then there's the one up in Union County). Moreover, it's not where the accident happened. Also, the free-stretch may not even be Parkway, it may be Route 9 or a Route 9-Parkway overlay, and its maintained by the NJDOT Where the accident happened is a part of the Parkway where the …   more ›

Brick Township Priest Arrested, Charged With Sex Offenses

Priest at Church of the Visitation was arrested over the weekend for alleged incident Friday

A Brick Township priest has been charged with criminal sexual contact against a mother and her minor child, authorities announced Monday afternoon. Fr. Marukudiyil C. Velan, 64, known to parishioners at Church of the Visitation as "Father Chris," was arrested Saturday by detectives from the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office and Brick Township Police Department. Earlier that day, township and county detectives interviewed a mother and her children – parishioners at the church – in connection with a report they had filed against Velan after he visited their home in Brick the day before, said Prosecutor Marlene Lynch Ford. During that visit, Ford said, it is alleged that Velan had "inappropriate contact" with the adult mother as well as her …
