Hurricane Sandy heavily damaged large portions of Manasquan's beachfront, and this week one of the most well-known businesses fell to the wrecking crew. Gee Gee's most damaged portion, its south side, was demolished this week. The northside is being prepared to reopen, selling pizza and other boardwalk food in time for the 2013 season. But the landmark business became a casualty to Hurricane Sandy and was torn into a pile of rubble this week. However, the signs of destruction that is Gee Gee's is being flanked by rebuilding to its north and south. As Opening Day Nears, Manasquan Outlines Hurricane Sandy Projects

Less than three weeks until May 23 beach celebration

Will Manasquan be ready for Memorial Day? Borough Administrator Joe DeIorio said the answer is "a resounding yes." DeIorio outlined the coming weeks' project schedule, culminating in a May 23 reopening celebration of the beachfront. The beachfront walkway should be completed by May 15, DeIorio said, adding that day is a target date for several projects. The asphalt top coat should be laid beginning May 13, according to the borough engineer. Electrical cables will be installed this week, and the light poles will be installed May 13-17, as well as Saturday, he said. Manasquan's Now-Open Beachfront a Mix of Normalcy and Mess

The damage to Manasquan's eastern portions came into clearer view this week after the borough lifted access restrictions to eastern portions Monday. The area allowed the return of residents as well as onlookers and contractors who were taking in the damage and reopening areas deemed safe. While so many businesses and homes need renovation, and the remnants of storm-swept sand still lined many streets, still residents went about their normal routines as much as possible.  Couples walked dogs along the battered beachfront. Children skatedboarded up and down First Avenue. Cars drove by, Christmas trees tied to the roof. But still, spray painted red X's noted which buildings saw the worst damage. These photos showing the damage break my heart. I have been going to the inlet for years enjoying every visit. I will pray for those affected by this disaster and hope there is some type of fundraiser on the horizen to help these people.   more ›
