Monmouth Recruiting Emergency Shelter Volunteers

Efforts now to recruit volunteers for when emergency shelters open in the future

Volunteers are needed to help staff emergency shelters when disaster strikes in Monmouth County. The Monmouth County Sheriff's Office released the following information as it recruits volunteers: The Monmouth County Sheriff's Office, Office of Emergency Management and the United Way of Monmouth have launched a recruiting campaign that is seeking volunteers to assist in the staffing of evacuation shelters during emergencies. This program is being conducted through a Memorandum of Understanding that was entered into by both agencies in August of 2012 in an effort to increasingly engage other Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD's) into the County Emergency Operations Plan. Monmouth Legislators Denounce Rutgers Basketball Coach

In statements released today, state legislators representing Monmouth County denounced the tactics Rutgers Basketball Coach Mike Rice was fired for today. Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean Jr. stated the following regarding video of Rutgers men’s basketball coach Mike Rice attacking players physically and verbally. “Everyone in New Jersey is deeply offended by Mike Rice’s inexcusable actions against student athletes who he is highly paid to mold and shape. In addition to being tasked with winning basketball games, Mr. Rice is paid by the public to foster the growth of student athletes and the overall success of New Jersey’s flagship university. Was It Something We Said? Monmouth Loses 708 Residents

County’s population drops for second year in a row, according to U.S. Census Bureau data

Your home county may seem like a small world, but in 2012 Monmouth became a tad smaller—708 residents smaller, to be exact. The U.S. Census Bureau released county population estimates Thursday for the year spanning July 1, 2011 through July 1, 2012.    Monmouth County’s estimated population shrank from 630,821 in 2011 to 629,384 in 2012. The decline marks the second year in a row the county’s population declined: the U.S. Census Bureau estimated the county lost 729 people between July 2010 and July 2011.   While the overall population saw a decline, births and deaths in Monmouth remained flat from 2011 to 2012. There were 6,074 births reported in the 2010 data and 6,100 in the 2012 numbers. Some 5,301 deaths were reported in the county in …

He left without a restaurant. Foundation awards six grants to organizations in Sandy-battered communities

OceanFirst Foundation’s Relief and Recovery Grant Program is awarding six new grants totaling $93,000 to organizations in Point Pleasant Beach, Toms River and Monmouth County. The recipients are: Ocean Fire Co. #1, Point Pleasant Beach; Caregiver Volunteers of Central Jersey, Toms River; Children’s Home Society, Toms River; Homes for All, Toms River; O.C.E.A.N., Inc., Toms River and United Way of Monmouth County, Farmingdale. Ocean City - John Thornton, a resident of the Ocean City Homes neighborhood on the south end of Ocean City and a teacher at the Art Institute of Philadelphia, recently completed a third segment of a film about the impact of superstorm Sandy on his friends, neighbors and hometown. The first 14-minute segment of the film starts on Saturday, Oct. 27, two days before Sandy makes landfall and continues through the storm. Former Executive of Engineering Firm Indicted in Pay-to-Play Scheme

Belmar man's indictment comes less than two weeks after another former executive of Birdsall Services Group pleaded guilty

A former executive of Birdsall Services Group, a Monmouth-based engineering firm, was indicted today, less than two weeks after another executive pleaded guilty for his role in a scheme to avoid the state's pay-to-play regulations. Thomas Rospos, 60, of Belmar was indicted after being accused of disguising illegal corporate political contributions as personal contributions by employees of the firm, according to a release from the Attorney General's Office. “Mr. Rospos allegedly conspired with others at Birdsall Services Group to circumvent New Jersey’s pay-to-play law through a fraudulent scheme in which extra bonuses were paid to employees to reimburse them for making unreported political contributions,” said Attorney General Jeffrey …
